choke for geese

Hi to all.I'm new to the forum and to goose hunting.I'm going this week with some experienced hunters.I just bought a winchester super x 2 .It can handle up to 3.5".It came with a full choke and the dealer said this was best unless I could call them in better than he.Ha ha.What is your advice?Field hunting mostly but some over water possible. Thanks and Merry Christmas!!!!!

RE: choke for geese

What are you shooting ?
Steel IC,Light mod , Mod or improved Mod
Hevi shot IC ,Light mod or Mod
Tun. Matrex or Bismuth mod ,Improved Mod or full
You will have to pattern your gun /choke /load at different ranges ,every gun and choke is a little different.
NEVER shoot steel or Hevi shot thrue a full choke not labeled for it ,you can mess up the barrel and choke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: choke for geese

I was told the choke tube and gun were good for steel.I haven't bought ammo yet and would like to hear suggestions.

RE: choke for geese

The tightest I like for geese is modified, but I do like to use an IC quite a bit also.

RE: choke for geese

Look at the choke and directions for the gun. Don't take his word,
The clerk way just have wanted to move it.
And I still would not use it !!
Ducks or geese canada or snows?
For canada geese I shoot # 2 Hevi shot 1 3/8 oz 3"
Steel BB , BBB or T as fast as posible in 3.5"
matrix #1
Bismuth BB
PATTEREN YOUR GUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen gun/choke shoot 2 feet left and low

RE: choke for geese

What about for a Remington 870 and shooting geese??? came with a modified choke but Ontario rules say no lead when hunting waterfowl. So I'm thinking I should change the choke (I'm assuming the stock choke ain't for steel) But which restriction should I buy??

johnch 12-27-2004 05:08 PM

RE: choke for geese

All Remington chokes LESS than full are steel rated.
IMO patteren your gun with the mod and see how it looks.
If you want to buy a new choke a Briley extended Light mod for all around steel shooting is what I recomend. You may have to order it.

charger19 12-27-2004 06:21 PM

RE: choke for geese

Is the light mod between improved and mod?Do you know if the briley will fit my win superx2?Haven't found a choke tube yet that I knew for sure would fit......

johnch 12-27-2004 09:16 PM

RE: choke for geese

Yes it is between IC and mod .
I did a quick check ,and it looks like they do .( same choke as Browning invector plus I think)

Well I shoot a 10 gauge and I shoot Federal 3.5 #2's and they pattern great!!

Here is a link to Wingtipsdown......FowlMouthed does not have one!

RE: choke for geese

Well I found a browning mod that fit.He didn't have ic.I'll keep looking or maybe order the briley but at least I can hunt this week.Anybody want to explain the difference between b,bb, and #2 to me?I'm cooking up some venison stroganoff if you want any....

Shawn(Ontario) 12-28-2004 04:52 PM

RE: choke for geese

Thanks John, the "stock choke" is a modified choke. I plan on patterning it this friday.

johnch 12-28-2004 05:30 PM

RE: choke for geese

Size. # 2 = .150 di.
...........B = .170
.........BB = .180
.......BBB =. 190
...........T = .200
This is what the pellets are supost to be in diamiter

charger19 12-28-2004 05:42 PM

RE: choke for geese

Thanks Johnch, I guess I'm really wondering how much difference it really makes at say 40 or 50 yards? At 60?

johnch 12-28-2004 07:16 PM

RE: choke for geese

IMO if you are shooting steel look at BBB out to 50 yds.
Steel looses to much at longer ranges ,50 is about the ethical max.
Yes you can brake a honkers wing or luck out and hit the neck or head at longer ranges .
But you will wound lots more than you will kill , lots of witch will fly away making you think you missed and then die later.
Also the birds will be harder to call in next time. Call the birds in close.
If you want to shoot farther use Hevi shot !!!!!!!!!!!!

charger19 12-28-2004 09:17 PM

RE: choke for geese

Thanks.I'm not planning on taking any long shots, I just wanted to know. You can't find this good info just anyplace!

Shawn(Ontario) 12-29-2004 06:21 PM

RE: choke for geese

"BBB steel is good out to 50 yards" Does the shell size matter?
will 3 1/2 " reach out and touch them farther or does it just through more shot at the geese than a smaller shell size?

johnch 12-29-2004 06:46 PM

RE: choke for geese

The 3.5" shell just fills in the patteren a little better .
The pellets will not kill any farther because the pellets slow down just as fast.

Shawn(Ontario) 12-31-2004 08:55 AM

RE: choke for geese

So..... the extra length in a longer shell is used to hold more shot, the restriction of the choke controls the density of the pattern, right???
Now, you base your choke selection on the expected range of your target; you want the tightest collection of shot at your expected range. Am I right so far???
But why would you choose a longer shell length over a shorter length??

Carpmaster 12-31-2004 09:17 AM

RE: choke for geese

I shoot the longer lengths to obtain a higher payload, or more pellets in the air to achieve higher pattern densities at any reasonable hunting range, I also use more open chokes than a lot of people.

johnch 12-31-2004 05:47 PM

RE: choke for geese

YesI use the extra pellets to fill in the patteren. Like Carpmaster said.
