"The Survey Says"!
Ok guys and gals, I know the season is over spring is around the corner and waterfowl hunting is the furthest item in our minds. However I would like to take a survey and publish my results with you. The Question “Which Shotgun do you hunt waterfowl with?” I had the pleasure of conversing with you fellow hunters about which shotgun I should buy. It was like a science project with variables, conditions, and procedures among others tangibles, which led me to this survey question. Keeping in mind buying a shotgun has some key items.
Example the brand, is to self-expression (hypotheses), pump or auto is to conditions, gauge is to purpose, barrel length is to variables, choke is to direct variables and price is to controlling factors. Who knows it could be fun and informative. Thanks |
RE: "The Survey Says"!
I'll start. remington 11-87 12ga 3.5 28" mod, midrange price for auto.
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
i use two mainly
rem 870 12g 28" with either mod or full choke moss 12g 28" only mod (swamp gun) both are pumps, the reason is a pump is easy to field strip and reassemble 2 miles into a marsh. ive watched to many auto's become single shots because of one spring. hope that helps. |
RE: "The Survey Says"!
right nascar88, my backup is rem870 wing 3" 28"mod. OK folks, lots of looks, so put your 2cents in.
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
Lets GO, put your vote IN. Thanks
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
vert, these guys are waterfowlers here, they look at the threads while still clinging to last years season.... not believing its really over. most a little sad some are still in mourning. they will loosen up.... patience...
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
Nas your more than likely right about being in mourning. Coming in to work I'm driving east into a beautiful red colored sunrise when outside of Readen over the lake is a couple flocks of what looked like Mallards circling for a landing and on the lake must have been 30 or 40 geese. JUst make the old heart pump and wish I had my old 870 2-3/4 12ga and the kids with me. Sneaky HUH got in my favorite shotgun is rem. and mentioned my kids.
CALL EM IN CLOSE AND SHOOT THEM IN THE EYES |

RE: "The Survey Says"!
Mourning I believe you. I just may be there soon. Here in Maryland I have been working at this old abandon racetrack (owner rep/business partner) since 1985. It is 42 acres with over 1000 ac of open space surrounding the property. The whole track of land backs up to the putuxant river watershed. Though we have done everything in this world to resurrect this place from a shopping center to a transportation center and the last stab to reopen the racetrack for highway avoidance anti-terrorist, driver training course. (I’m former police still working with them as a civilian). We have been using this place as our/my own hunting preserve. Since I stated working at this place we cleaned in up opened the drainage areas planted wild rice, Milo and spots of corn throughout the property. Our marsh, which is apx 680,000 ft square, has come alive with waterfowl and aquatic life. We now have beavers and they have done what I could never do with a backhoe. The resident Canadians have already started paring off and making nests. What a site when an established couple stakes their claim to their territory, what a fight. It is so good to see what we have accomplished with this old place by preserving it and bringing it back to natural life. Well as the faiths have it we are at our last straw and the owner needs to sell the property. To be with one place for so long, when that day comes I will defiantly be in mourning.

RE: "The Survey Says"!
I use 870 3.5" synthetic 26" barrel usually mod. choke with 4's, 3's, and 2's as main shot used. Great gun, very reliable and tough, been through mud, water, ice without a hitch. I love it, although I don't have much choice with what I can afford being in college, but I'm sure it will always stand as at least a reliable backup if not more.
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
I use a browning bps 12 ga. mod. 3 in. chamber. Gun can be shot either left or right handed, which would be easier to resale if needed, because top safety and bottom ejection.
IOWA!!, Gods choice of Heaven on Earth!! |

RE: "The Survey Says"!
Main gun-Rem.S.P.10 back-up(never needed) B.P.S.10 I also have an 11-87,870 a couple Ithaca 37's one of which is 3", but I stay with a 10 as most of my hunting is for big geese, with an occasional mallard or black coming into the goose dekes.

RE: "The Survey Says"!
First off Thanks to all you guys and gals who responded to both of my topics "to buy or not to buy and Survey Says". I will get the results from ther other web sites and give you the heads up, for now the survey says the SP10 kicked on the 10 ga auto side. BPS 10 on the pump side, not much comp in this area. On 12 ga Everone wanted a Benelli SBE but bought the 11-87 in autos. Benelli NOVA 3.5 out did 870 hands down in 12 ga pumps. Numbers are on the way. Yhanks again.
As for me for the cost of a new SP 10 ga which I really wanted but needed to make my money go a little more I got this combo. A BPS 10 ga 26"camO, sling,HIVIS bar and soft case. 10 ga dies for my relaoder. 7lb bag of HeviShot, cases, primers, wads and powder enough for 56 rounds. Repaired my old 870 3"wingmaster with New 28" barrel with 3 choke tubes, new synthetic stock set , camoclad, swivels and sling. all for under 1109.00 the cost of a SP10 with MONEY left over. |
RE: "The Survey Says"!
remington 870 express, It is a pump. only shoots three inch.
hey also only shoot 3 inch remington shells out of it |
RE: "The Survey Says"!
Rem 870 20 GA 28in barrel. I got it when I started hunting and never had any problem with it.
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
Browning Citoi in Lightning configuration 28" barrels 2 3/4 loads with either IC or Mod chokes. Next year I'll be going to the same gun in a 20ga if I can find shells that will give me the pattern I'm looking for out of my 20.
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
This season I used a Benelli Nova,24"bbl camo shooting #2's using a Mod.choke with pretty good success.Every now and then,I'd take out My Savage O/U Mod440-skeet/skeet with 2 3/4" #2's.

I bought mine fresh off the shot show.. and have owned it for three years and NEVER have had a problem..28" mod 3" no# 2's for just about everything on the water...Crank up the shot size to 3 1/2's for geese....Takeum

RE: "The Survey Says"!
I bought my first 870 in 72 and never had any trouble with but it was stolen in a B+E. in 84. I bought an 870 express a few years later. I use mod.,improved, and improved cylinder, depending on the hunt itself.I have covered it in mud ,sand ,marsh crap ,and had to retieve it from the bottom of a slew once when our boat sunk.Itwas the only one in working order out of 4 shotguns that went for a swim, the others were various autos. I am also a southpaw and use the righthanded model with no trouble at all. I was brought up using an Ithica 20ga but I prefer my 870 anytime.
That is one man`s opinion. |
RE: "The Survey Says"!
Yet another 870 Express 12 gauge with a 3" chamber, had it for 12 years and it has never failed on me yet.
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
You can shoot waterfowl with any gun mentioned here. My 2 cents says hurry up and pick one out because teal season is less than 6 months away. And it is not too early to start going through your decoys to get them up to snuff.
|
RE: "The Survey Says"!
Browning BPS 10 gauge....smacks the crap ut of them.
Back it up with a 870 express..... |
RE: "The Survey Says"!
BROWNING GOLD 31/2 / COMPNCHOKE SKEET

RE: "The Survey Says"!
I'm with Bud Light it's never to early to start working on decoys. The first chance i can get in to the shed past the snow I will start getting them ready for the folling year.As for my shotgun that I use - Mossburg 835 and my back up gun would be my grand fathers Model 12 with bismith shot. It's a great gun to shoot. Shawn
