How did you get hooked on duck hunting?
 

I got hooked the first day I went out and didn't fire once. It was fun though watching the flocks of ducks flying over out of shooting range and just fly around. My dad made me go out even though I didn't feel like it. But I should've went out early. I love it. How did you get started into duck hunting.

The very first time I went duck hunting I hated every second of it. I had a cheap pair of waders that werent insulated. So I about froze to death. And I had never even walked in waist deep water with mud, so I got Baptized going out to the pockets. So now Im wet and cold. Well I figured I would stick it out. Well the teal started coming in and I think I shot two boxes of shells, and never got a single duck. So I just about gave up. Well the next weekend we went to a different slough and I started hitting ducks. I was hooked then. Now I have some private land in two different places, that hold lots of ducks. And once in a while some geese will come in. Its amazing how I went from Hateing it to loving it. Wouldnt miss opening day for anything.

I`d like to blame my father for getting me hooked on waterfowling. First time
out, I was 10, shot a Mallard with a singleshot 20ga. Been hooked ever since.

i moved a few years ago, and changed jobs. it gave me more free time. so i started hunting doves (for the first time in 15 years, since high school), that was fun but i wanted to hunt something after the season was over. duck season started about the time dove season ended. then there was goose season, & spring turkey. the next year i applied for a deer tag and hunted them too.

I am blaming the teal. Was twelve years old, sitting in a rock pile in a cut corn field. The rain was falling, the fog was thick and was about 35 degrees. Couldn't have kept the teal out of that pothole with a hundred scarecrows and an artillery piece. I don't think I have ever had ducks come into a pond so well since, esp. since there were no decoys or camoflage involved. The fever waned over the years but was re-ignited when I finally got a really good duck call (same for geese), now I would be happy to call ducks into a spread and not fire a shot. Well, pretty much happy anyway

I was 10 years old when my grandfather needed a hunting partner for the day. I had an old 1898 Stevens 16 guage double barrel Indian Trading gun. He took me to the far edge of a large lake and we spread out a dozen or so old decoys. It was overcast, windy, drizzling and about 30 degrees. He put me in a bunch of bullrushes and told me to sit tight and he would be back. In an hour or so he came back to see over a hundred teal, mallards, and canvasbacks sitting in and around my decoys. He snuck down and wondered why I was shooting ducks. I told him he had told me to sit tight and wait and so I was (when Grandpa spoke I obeyed). Anyway that day he taught me how to get a bag the perfect 100 point menu. That was the Nebraska law back then. To this day, there is nothing more beautiful than calling in and buying 'the perfect 100 point' menu. So I blame my grandfather-may he rest in peace.

Well, let's see...

A friend ( I think ), asked me to go duck hunting. I had hunted small game and whitetails for 15 years prior to this invite. We paddled our canoes to his blind and set his dekes. After shooting time began, we had a couple mallards fly in. Once I missed the first duck, I think I became hooked!

When I was about 13 I got real drunk and said "Hey, I think I will take up duck hunting." (J/K)

My never duck hunted much, he was a turkey and upland man. I just got curious and started, and now thats all we hunt for in the winter. I love it. We had a good season this past winter.

A hunting buddy of mine had some friends over and he was saying how he couldnt take them hunting the next day. so i offered to take them because i had never gone and had a good pond with some ducks on it. Now i spend all my extra money on hunting ducks and geese.

My dad was the reason that I am duck hunting. He used to take me when I was still in diapers, and I have never looked back! Duck hunting (heck all hunting and fishing) is a passion that I hope will never end, it is hard to beat the rush I get when wings are whistling overhead and finally the best two words in hunting are yelled......"TAKE 'EM"!!!

Started for me back in '74 down in Oakwood Bottoms... a flooded empoundment of the Mississippi River down in extreme southern Illinois.

I just started my new job in the city's Engineering Dept. and the city engineers were both duck hunters. They got me started.

First day that I went with 'em we had a flock of 25-30 mallards drop right in on top of us... ducks literally landing at our feet.... as Oakwood Bottoms is a series of flooded pin oak groves... 'bout 24" deep in water... and those birds wanted bad to get into those fallen acorns to feed for a spell.

Well... with all these birds floating all around me... I looked at them... and they looked at me... and I swear that I could hear a couple of 'em say... "OH F*CK"... well, they just exploded when the first shot was fired.... what a racket... wings a beatin'... feathers everywhere. I gotta be honest here... I shot three times... and nary a bird fell on account of me. I couldn't believe it! lol.

But BOY... was I hooked.

I would have to say it’s my friends dad. He got me hooked on hunting birds, rabbits and fishing. I don’t know what I would be doing in the fall if it wasn’t for him..

Been hunting my whole life, but ducks weren't something we hunted in the Ozarks (very few Ducks). 5 Years ago I got transferred to Stuttgart, AR and siezed the moment. My company leased a field right off of Bayou Meto and I spent the entire season taking clients hunting. We had a guy working for us at the time who grew up hunting ducks and he showed me the in's and out's. I've since moved again, but my company retains the duck lease and I've acquired a few more places to hunt ducks. I'd say I was hooked before I ever went, the anticipation was building so much! The best part is, I still take business associates a few times a year so my company reimburses me for any money I spend on gear, clothing, shot, etc. How lucky can a guy be?

Growing up with Lake St. Clair in my back yard, the ducks and geese were always around me. And my uncle was big into the duck hunting and always had me around. Being his retreiver most of the time....LOL

I went out my first time at 12 years old with a friend of mine and his dad, it was freezing, foggy, adn raining like nobodys business. Then that first flock came in a i dropped a teal with my break-apart single 12. It absolutely changed my life and now i go duck huntitng at every oppurunity i can get. I dont think theyre is any sport more pure or enjoyable im just hooked and i love it!

When I was 12, my dad had a Chesapeake Bay retriever that we dove hunted with. After that I loved messing with dogs. At about 20 I got a Lab and started training. He's an awesome dog. I started running hunt test with him. The hunt tests are mainly based on Duck hunting. So after that I started duck hunting. I Love to watch the dogs work. Its not so much the ducks to me as it is the dogs.

As a kid I was obsessed with outdoor adventures of all kinds. I read every outdoor magazine, like Field & Stream, etc., many books about the outdoors or hunting, and constantly read and dreamed about hunting of all kinds. When I was growing up, there was a Herter's store nearby. At the time, old George Herter used to write wonderful descriptions about the gear for sale in the catalog, and I remember even poring over the catalog for hours on end.

My father hunted deer and pheasants, but not waterfowl. When I turned 12 I bought my own shotgun, a Winchester Model 50 autoloader, spent the summer shooting trap in a trap league, and persuaded my father to take me duck hunting that fall. I got some decoys from Sears or Montgomery Wards, can't recall, that were paper mache. It took a long time for me to shoot my first bird, but that didn't matter, I was hooked on quack before I even stepped into the swamp that first time!!

Some buddies took me several years ago and now I'm hooked on quack! I was iching for next years season the day after this past season went out!
