forget about the camo finish. get a baikal mp-153 in matte black, you can put camo tape over it if you really feel it has to be camoed up. a friend of mine got one a few months ago and it works great.

I bought a Beretta Xtrema 3.5 this summer. Shot doves in september and ducks on ice with it, no jams. It shoots soooo soft and is easy to maintain. If your looking semi auto, go with this gun. Camo finish is available. Mossberg is the cheap way out. Get a good gun and keep it for life instead of buying 5 mossbergs.

You should research more before making such foolish and false statements[&:] Mossberg is as good as any and better than most, that includes Winchester, Beretta and other overpriced guns.
I'm also looking for a good 3.5" gun and am down to two choices, Mossberg 935 and Baikal mp153.True the 935 is new and isn't yet established as a true performer, but Mossberg has been building solid, reliable guns for many years and I see no reason why the 935 should be any different. So far I have yet to hear a negative report on this gun.Same goes for the MP153, very relaible and again, I have yet to discover any flaws in this gun, it has deffinately proven itself. Both are priced to be consumer friendly. It makes no sense to pay $1,000-$1,500 for a gun that does the job no better than a $500 gun, unless it's snob appeal your after.Funny thing though, dead geese don't know the difference.

I've got an 835 mossberg thats about 8 years old and has never given me any troubles , not one time. It came in camo finish...This year I bought one of the new 870s in matt black with synthetic stocks that came in 3 1/2 inch...Its a duck and goose killing son of a gun too....I have one problem with it and thats if you hunt near any salt water it will rust before your eyes...I was on a two day trip and cleaned it three times...I suggest , since you already have one 870 , to buy one or the camo finish 870s in 3 1/2...That way your choke tubes will interchange...My new 3 1/2 870 shoots like a dream , and the only problem I have with it was the rusting near salt water...Two guys I hunted with were shooting 870 camos and theirs only needed cleaning on the inside , showed no rust on the exterior at all... My gun will be rust proof after this season but it will still be black

i've owned 3 new mossbergs, and my expierience with them has been bad. 2 had broken safeties within a year, and that nasty rattley -loose forearm drives me insane. my 3-1/2 jammed like no other gun i've owned.
i switched to a rem 1100 for turkeys with no issues, good gun.

for ducks i prefer to use my red label, (no Jams!);) It shoots great with the carlson tubes i installed (mod and imp mod)
good luck!

I'd go with the Benneli Black Eagle semi-auto any day!
It handles anywhere from a 3 in to a 4 in shell.

Works great on all!

When did they start producing 4" shells? And who's making them?

I've got two suggestions that haven't been made yet...if you want a good 3 1/2 inch shotgun under 500$ then look at:

1) Benelli Nova pump...a lot of guys I know shoot them and they are pretty much bulletproof. My brother got a camo one for Xmas and it ran him $349. That's a lot of gun for the money.

2)Browning BPS...the 3 1/2 Stalkers run about $450 and are as solid as they come. The camo ones will run you a little more. A little more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Don't rule these two out.

Remington 870 SPS - 26" barrel.

Sorry coolbrezO, I've got to disagree on that one.Anything made by Remington should be overlooked if it's reliability your looking for.I can supply posts to enforce my opinion if you wish.As said before, I'm also in the same boat, the 935 looks like the answer for my needs .

Greeting to All - knowing what they say about opinions, I'll just state my experiances. Nova pump - jammed every Remington 3.5" shell I tried. No problem with Federals. Have no idea why. Hunting buddy had problems with the camo finish. I switched to a Winchester Super X2 never had a problem ever. Have to keep the ports clean though. SBE no problems. Mossberg.. not the best made nor the least punishing on your shoulder but for a mud gun..no issues at all.

I bought the Nova after deciding not to pay the money for the camo Super X2. I have never had a semi auto. The nova is a suberb gun, enough said....

RE: best 3 1/2 inch gun

We have 2 Remington 870 super mag 12 gauges that jam a federal EVERY time, but i still like the gun. I just got a Charles Daily Field Hunter Maxi Mag, just cause it was a cheap 3 1/2" gun and it likes to try to put 2 shells in the chamber every now and then if you dont pump it hard enough. Also i had to trim about a half inch off of the plug to fit 3.5" shells into the gun.(CD costomer service told me to) which i just think is reatarded. Who wants to buy a gun and then have to hack saw it. I really do like the Browning BPS and the Binelli Nova though.

Check out Franchi Variomax 912. This is the same gun as the Beneli Super Black Eagle. Just cheaper. Franchi is manufactured by Benelli. It's an awesom gun.

Love mine.

I have a Winchester Super X2 which has been to h### and back and has performed without a hitch. I have used it for 6 seasons now. I have used it on clays in 100 degree plus days shooting the lightest loads available to using it on duck in near zero degree temps with heavy magnum loads. Coated with ice, caked with mud, soaking wet...it dosen't matter, this gun WORKS!!! For my money, the BEST 3 1/2" semi-auto out there.

My vote would have to go with the 835 Mossberg. I have 2 of them,1 green camo for turkey and deer the other one is a marshgrass camo

here it is in use:D

Theres not much that can rust on a Nova. The stock and the fore arm can't
rot.Its light enough to hunt quail and pheasant all day.It has a recoil reducer for shooting 3.5" shells.I've shot 3" faststeel loads in#2and#4 shot with very little kick. You don't need tools to break it down to clean it.You might be able to buy a used one for less then three hundred bucks.

The nova is a great pump gun. I have one.

I also bought a $330 Baikal auto........best $330 I have spent, has been flawless.

How can the Franchi Variomax 912 be the same as the SBE when it is gas chambered? The fact that the SBE is not gas chambered is what seperates it from all the rest.

I will be more than happy to except my mistakes!!!!!! I do own the 912 and like it a lot. I thought it was the same as the SBE, but I stand corrected. There is a correlation between the 912 and one of the Benelli guns, but I'm not sure which one. Sorry for the mis-information, and I stand corrected.

Don't worry, I have let a couple lines fly with good intensions, only to find out that it wasn't exactly correct.

There is a link on the Benelli website for Franchi so I assume that Benelli owns them as well or something of the sort. I do agree that they are good guns. I hunted some quail with a guy last year that had an over-and-under and he was tickled to death.

I do that for sure......Franchi is indeed owned and manufactured by Benelli. I'm not sure if they are made in the same plant. I watched a show on the manufacturing process and facilities of Benelli. Very impressive. They did not mention Franchi....the show was sponsored by Benelli.

I do know that Franchi and Benelli share many parts. Many of the actions and stocks are the same. Again...not sure of which models are the same. Either way...both are great guns. I ended up going with the Franchi because the price was easier on my wallet.

browning of course!! bps or auto. i got both and they shoot great. real solid even with the 10 gauge pump the recoil is not bad at all.

RE: best 3 1/2 inch gun

Whatever you decide stick with a pump gun the maufactures have not figured out how to deal with the extra recoul from the 3.5 and alot of the bolt returns are snapping call your local gunsmith and ask him what 3.5's he hasn't seen yet that will be worth more than any other info. and keep his number handy if you do buy a mossberg.

RE: best 3 1/2 inch gun

My guess is that they were using the phrase "anywhere from a 3 to a 4" very loosely and they were just merely rounding up. I personally have not heard of a 4". I own a Bennelli Super Black Eagle know it is only chambered up to a 3.5".
