Default Ice hunting

Yesterday evening I went hunting down in the flooded river bottoms by my house and seen alot of mallards and some pintails. I decided to hunt it this morning and it was completely frozen over unlike the night before when it didnt have any sign of ice. It wasnt thick ice so I decided to try to make a hole off the the bank a good ways. I made a pretty big hole and put some decoys out but left room for any ducks that would want to land. I had some ducks circle but they just didnt want to land. The hole was about 50yards by 25yards. Have any of you guys tried this and if so what do you do?

My guess either the hole was to close to the bank or thick cover for their liking
Or they saw something they didn't like
Like you , a dog , a silver candy wrapper ect

I have done the same thing a lot of times with great luck
But like you , sometimes the birds just will not play

Was it sunny ?
Had problems a few times on sunny days , never could figure it out

Tryed it again a day or 2 later and the ducks and geese poured in

I've had great success doing the same thing. I think John hit the head on the nail. The first thing that came to my mind was, did you have a robo out with the sun shining? Good luck!

just keep the ice away from your decoys even if you have to go out and chip ice every 10 mins
