Default Anyone ever tried coot?

Yes, there is actually a season and limit on the old wiley coot. Coots can be quite tasty depending on where you kill them. We killed a boat load of them one day in a reservoir where they were eating aquatic vegetation. Weput their very small breast strips on the grill with barbeque sauce and they were pretty awesome. As good as any duck I have ever eaten. Another time we killed some in aminnow pond. Need I go further. They were horrible. As long as they are eating aquatic vegetation they taste pretty good.If you haven't tried them, give them a shot. Of course they don't decoy too well.

For my first three years of duck hunting, I shot coots on a regular basis. The taste fine to me, and if I neededa bird or two for lunch, a coot was usually shot. This year I never even put my gun up on a coot. This yearI went more to the quality of the hunt then the quanity of birds shot. There's nothing wrong with them IMO

They aren't wood ducks....but they aren't mergansers either.

I'd love to see them on Iron Chef. The Iron Chef Coot Shootout. The Mud Hen Marathon.

Deep fryed coot breast chunks is pretty good eating

Not going to say they are as good as Woodie

We have a coot fry every year
This year we let my freinds 12 year old son shoot them
On the slow days he kept my lab bussy

6 couples ate 80 or so coot breasts cut into nuggets, frys , beer and the other fixens
Not 1 was left

Coots are eating the same stuff as all the other ducks 99 times out of 100. They aren't a corn fed mallard, but they eat fine. I'm not sure how they got the stigma of being so terrible.
