RE: Posession limits?

I have never had a dnr cop ask me what is in my freezer. I was told by them that you can have as much as you want- already processed- and that your possession limit is anything not processed- We can kill only one goose a day in Md our possession limit is two. I know that everyone here has way more than 2 in their freezer.

RE: Posession limits?

I've seen game wardens in my area argue about this very topic. You would think there is ambiguity around it, but hunting laws state, at least here in quebec, that possession is total possession (what you have shot during the day + whatever else you have at home, freezer, etc...).

From the conversations I have had with wardens on the topic, the law was passed primarily to control the number of birds taken over the course of a weekend or hunting trip and are more heavily enforced during transport. That said, I wouldn't take any chances.

I emailed maryland dnr. Asked them too define possession limit,, this is there reply!

The Bag Limit is what's your are permitted to shootÂdaily. TheÂPossession Limit is what you are allowed to possess in total at any one time. This includes your daily bag limit and what you may have taken on another day that's in a cooler in your vehicle because you are away from home plus what'sÂin your refrigerator/freezer at home, and anyplace you would store game.

Thats great but I was just going by what dnr cops have told me. Honestly do you only have the daily possession limit in your freezer???

RE: Posession limits?

Nope,, Ive got 1 mason jar left of goose jerky, thats 1 bird.
Ive got 2 woodducks that are going in the roast pan in about 2 hours, and I ate mallard roll-ups yesterday. None of my fowl ever gets frozen,, unless im saving up geese too make pepperettes.

RE: Posession limits?

In Washington State, possession limit no longer applies once the meat is processed, such as made into jerky, etc. Someone told me that after it is frozen it no longer counts, but I can't find the true definition in our game regs. I have a game warden friend I'm going to ask.

RE: Posession limits?

You'd better be sure of you state's laws then. Because there are states, includes this one, where a DNR officier can and will search a person's coolers, freezers in a camper or home, IF they have reason to believe you have more than possession limit. Most states I know of possession limit is 2 times the daily bag limit of game or fish.

If you states explicitly says otherwise, good deal. But don't assume that and just don't give a warden a reason to make him think you may have over possesion limit anywhere in you possession. answer truthfully direct questions, but don't volunteer any information in thinking your talking to a friend or something. Some wardens are very descent, just looking for the flaggrant violators. Some can be real jerks and look for any possible way to give someone a ticket or more. That's all.
