Between the two I would go for Beretta, but also try sweet talking grandpa into a SBE 2. A real waterfowl gun.

I'm sure you are glad that you got the Xtrema II. The Xtrema II does cost more but it's worth it. The Xtrema is lighter but also balances that weight with more towards the stock. The 11-87 has an extreme barrel heavy balance which I don't like. The Xtrema has much better quality than the 11-87. Both hold five rounds total and can take an extension to hold more. The Xtrema does a pretty good job at cycling lighter loads for a 3 1/2" model or about as good as or better than a 3" 11-87. The Xtrema has more features like an automatic cutoff and a bolt lock lever. The Xtrema also comes with shims to adjust the stock for a better fit. Gun fit is the number one factor in felt recoil. The 11-87 is not too bad to clean but, the Xtrema is way easier to clean. It is even easier if you include the recoil springs.

The receiver on the Xtrema is longer than most partly due to the fact it's a 3 1/2" model. The main reason is it has a rotary bolt face which accounts for most of the receiver length.
