A year ago the winter took its toll of birds and this year, completely different. I have been trapping our area the hardest I ever had which still isn't very hard(I am really gonna do it hard next fall) and now we have about 5-10 pheasants in a about 20 acres of CRP plots and just tonight along the road saw about 15 birds(split hens and roosters) about 10 miles from our place. May not sound like much, but this is more birds than we have ever had on our place.

I just saw the other day a Hen Pheasant right in front of my house. In this part of Indiana you don't see too many. Is there anything I can do to help her along, besides killing all of the cats, fox's and coyotes?

GOOD TO HEAR THE PHEASANT POP. IS ON THE RISE. HERE IN ENGLAND THERE ARE TONS OF THEM I WATCHED 16 OF THEM IN MY BACKYARD OVER THE WEEKEND, BEST THING TO DO IS LEAVE SOME WILD BIRD FEED OUT FOR HER, DON'T PUT IT IN A BOWL JUST SPRINKLE SOME HERE AND THERE, THAT WAY YOU KNOW SHE IS GETTING A STEADY HELPING OF FOOD.

Mathews-This spring if you can, plant some wheat or rye, something they can nest in and that will help alot. Pretty soon, if she survives, a rooster will move in to breed her. They will nest in April.
The other day when I was rabbit hunting brush piles north of our CRP we saw nearly 20 pheasants. I am amazed that many birds in that quick. About October there were 0 birds on about a 50 acre area.

Here in central Illinois they were down it seems. We did not see even half what we saw for 2000 or 2001.
Though I be wounded,
I am not slain,
I'll lay me down to bleed awhile
and then I'll rise and fight again!
