Default win. 97

My dad and i are going to hunt doves this weekend on public ground over sunflowers where steel shot is required. My dad likes to shoot older guns and wanted to carry his winchester 97 with a modified barrel i told him i wasnt sure if that was a good idea. Does anyone here know weather this would be ok or not as far as not damaging the barrel on his old shotgun?

I have been told my self not to use the old guns with the steel shot - Why? I don't know but I would agree with Chassit .... Better Safe than Sorry.
