Yeah I agree with everyone, a 20 GA works well for pheasant, and i would use #6 shots because i have a long story short I don't remember what load i was using but it was for smaller game birds (dove/quail) but i was at a pheasant hunt around 1993 and I shot a pheasant that was only 15 feet away(shot out of instinct and with a 20 Ga) at most but i was lucky for 2 reasons; 1. I accidently had the wrong load 2. I shot it in the head and rather in the body. Had i used #6 and/or hit it in the body, the whole bird would have been a waste (not too mention would be spitting out BBs at the dinner table)

My gun of choice for upland birds is my 20 gauge winchester model 50 semi. Lots of bang to knock down anybird i am goin to shoot at plus it is much lighter then any of my 12s.
