I have taken quite a few phesants with my 20ga. Remmington 870 Wingmaster with a full choke barrel, with either 7.5 or 6 shot. Never failed me yet.

Yeah I agree with everyone, a 20 GA works well for pheasant, and i would use #6 shots because i have a long story short I don't remember what load i was using but it was for smaller game birds (dove/quail) but i was at a pheasant hunt around 1993 and I shot a pheasant that was only 15 feet away(shot out of instinct and with a 20 Ga) at most but i was lucky for 2 reasons; 1. I accidently had the wrong load 2. I shot it in the head and rather in the body. Had i used #6 and/or hit it in the body, the whole bird would have been a waste (not too mention would be spitting out BBs at the dinner table)

IT will do just fine. I started out hunting pheasants with a 410 and brought home a lot of birds.

My gun of choice for upland birds is my 20 gauge winchester model 50 semi. Lots of bang to knock down anybird i am goin to shoot at plus it is much lighter then any of my 12s.

my first shotgun was a 20 single shot and it worked really well. Kinda of a bummer having for dove and quail season but its a good gun to learn on in the beginning.
