Anybody use a pump action?
Does anybody use a pump action for wing-shooting? I'm curious because the hype seem to be on the auto's and I rarely see anybody hunting birds with pump actions. I have an 870 Remington and was wondering is this good enough to shoot doves or ducks.

SH, go ahead and use your 870! I have used one for over 30 years on everything from doves to Greater Canada geese and I have never had a problem with it.

pumps will always be more reliable than semi's. i use a pump a winchester 1300. no complaints whatsoever! just wish i could perform as well as that gun.

SH, I've used a pump-action for years and I can't blame any lost birds on the gun. Any problems with mine can usually be traced to the person behind it. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

SH - Pumps are the s#%t! Even though I do most of my wingshooting with a Spanish double, I still take my old Ted Williams 20ga pump out into the chukar hills every once in a while. Reminds me of times long since past...times when I used to hunt pheasants with my father...

i used my mossberg 500 for 3 yrs now...people say what crap it is and stuff...i watched a guy with a benelli sbe pull up drop the first goose....and the gun jammed on the second!(his fault for not breaking it in though lol) but i found it funny..ive never had a problen with my mossberg and ive shot tons of rounds through it in the time i had it too...only time i had a problem was training my friends dog with chuckers..i took the last shots and forgot to reload...came up on the next one...pulled the trigger for nothing ot happen...forgot to reload! lol..bout the only problem i had...and im still almost as fast as a semi but twice as accurate...while i take the recoil i reload and am ready for hte second...if u pull the tigger 3 times fast sure u will ebat me and my pump but your 2nd and 3rd shots wont be close! i love my pump gun..goin after grouse rabbit and maybe a pheasant or 2 tomarow with it too!

I bought my first 870 I believe in 1952 still have it and have one in 3 inch and a BPS 10 for geese. Never had a problem with a pump. I have had a few semi- autos and never did get to liking them. Also have a couple of doubles and love them also. The autos can be finicky if you don't feed them the right ammo and keep them clean.

Like many of the post here, I agree ,there's nothing wrong with a pump for wing shooting. I also started out with a Model 37D and shot it extremely well for years. I no longer shoot a pump ,but that's a personal choice. My 37 will get handed down to my nephew when he's old enough. It still brings back memories of a youngster's first days afield and thoughts of some triples on Blue wing Teal when I had finally learned to shoot.
