RE: Over/Under Question
Posted,
If your looking at the Rug red lable or the Browning Ctr your cant go wrong. The only thing I'd mention is if your concerned about what its like to carry in the field you should give some thought to barrel length. A 26 in barrel for upland is good choice.
Good luck, you won't be sorry. O/U and S/S are the way to go for upland.

RE: Over/Under Question
I use the Browning Citori White Lighting O/U in the 28 gauge..I use a 2 3/4 shell...7 1/2 shot...brings them pheasant and quail right down. Don't see the need in carrying a heavier gun and the 28 has less kick to it.

RE: Over/Under Question
I didn't see a noticable difference between the weight of the 20 guage vs the 12 guage for the same ruger red label. I know the book says the difference is 1/2 lb, but after a day hunting with one and a day hunting with the other, I personally wouldn't see a difference. My brother couldn't either (he has the 20 guage).
I think if you look around, you would be able to find it under $ 1,000 new as I did. I got mine at a store in Northern New Hampshire called Cotes (doubly nice as there is no sales tax).
Good luck,

RE: Over/Under Question
Shot size...good question. Depends upon whether steel is involved and what type of bird you're shooting. You'll usually want a little stronger shot for wild vs. pen raised. For steel use two sizes larger shot, ie. no. 4 instead of no. 6. Everyone has their favorite for whatever game, but for me, I generally like to keep things simple.
Pen raised Pheasants: no. 6, 2 3/4" Lead - no. 4, 3" steel (if I can find some)
Wild pheasants: same but if there was a no. 5 shot, I'd be all over it.
Quail and chukar: no. 7 1/2, 2 3/4" lead- never need steel yet.
Also, I really don't pay attention to dram eq. although I'm suppose to. All my shots have been using 1 1/4 dram.

RE: Over/Under Question
i shoot a beretta bl-4 in 20ga , takes 3" shells. This gun was purchased by my father in 1974 and used by me for the last 10yrs. Never had a problem. If I was to buy another o/u , it would be beretta. 3" #5 winchester super x's. Damn near a 12ga with 3" shells.
