Last day longbeard!
Got my second bird for team 8 this morning. I decided to sleep in this morning since I have done alot of hunting and been on a bunch of turkeys this year. Anyhow I got up at 7:30, ate breakfast and then went and rode around a while. At about 8:00, I came to a spot where two evenings earlier, a buddy of mine missed one on a ridgetop and he flew across a road onto another ridge. Well this morning I decided to stop and walk up a logging road that heads up to where that turkey flew to. I found a beautiful open hardwoods clearing that just looked like a grand place to call in a turkey. I sat down and made some soft hen yelps and clucks. I didn't want to get loud because all the turks around here have been yelped to death. Anyhow, after about 15 minutes of nothing I got out my gobble call and gave 3 or 4 gobbles. I sat for about 10 minutes of silence and then yelped a bit. A bird hammered at about 150 yards. He came running off that ridge stopping to strut and gobble about every twenty yards, and would have come right in my lap if I hadn't decided that 35 yards was far enough. I believe he was lonely and a long ways off and couldn't hear my hen yelps. When I gobbled he heard them and decided to investigate, so when I yelped again he was close!! The whole hunt took about 45 minutes. So i was in the woods at 8 out at 8:45 with a beautiful 2 year-old, last-day NC mountain long beard. All you hunters out there...If you spook a turkey away from his hens or other turkeys...He can be called in sometimes rather easily...even on the last-day of season....don't give up on a gobbler!!
