difference between hen and tom

Default difference between hen and tom

besides the beard on a tom, how else could you tell the difference?
i am just starting out and wondering.

The head will chnage color from red,blue and white.

Coloring of the feathers are different.

Actually the only thing that a Gobbler will have that a hen can never have is spurs. I wouldn't go by head color, You better make sure you read up on your states requirements for the spring, most states require a bearded bird, which in turn can be either a hen or gobbler. You can get an off colored hen head that may look like a gobblers head in low light or foggy conditions.

Its Simple...Toms for one are dark black while hens are lighter black/gray....Head color 2

If you aren't sure whether it's a hen or jake or a tom, it's probably a hen.

Along with those guidlines, a mature Tom will be noticably larger than the hen.
