patterning with mossberg 835 and hevi-shot
I shot my 835 today with 3 1/2" hevi-shot #5s, 1 7/8 oz payload through a truglo gobble stopper choke and was very pleased with the patterns. I got 198 pellets in a 10" circle at 30 yards. Does anyone know how many pellets are in that load total? I think this is pretty good isnt it? Does anyone else use this gun/load and what results do you guys get through other guns?

Remington lists 301 pellets in their #5, 1 7/8 ounce Hevi-shot payload. Your pellet hit count is outstanding. I'd be interested in the 40 yard target. BTW... what constriction is your choke tube? I don't own a 835, but if I recall, their turkey chokes are a bit more open than most.

Thanks Jolly, my choke constriction is .690. I actually paid only $3 for it about a month after turkey season last year at walmart. It was about $30 regular if i remember right, so i was happy. also I think the bore diameter on the 835 is .790, 10 gauge bore diameter.

Yessir, you're right... I did read a while back that the 835 and their 10 gauge were the same ID. The Browning BPS that I recently aquired is in the same game... the barrel is back-bored like their 10 and the stock BPS turkey choke mic's a .695 constriction.
I've been toying around with chokes when weather permits and thus far, the Remington Hevi-shot 3 1/2 incher #6 shot, 1 7/8 ounce load is way out front. I've narrowed the chokes down to a .665 or .670 for this gun. It's just too cold here right now to do final testing and I've got to gather up a .670 before I can say with reasonable certainty which is going to be the winner. I've sent shells through chokes with ratings of .650, .655, .660, .675, and .695, with all things being out-gunned by the .660. I'm leaning to the 665 in hopes to make the 40 yard pattern more uniform. I'm real happy with what I have, (super concentrated shot groupings), but I *think* I can tweak it a bit more.

I reload new 3" Cheddite shells with 1 3/4 oz hevi #5 buffered with Alliant Steel powder. I shoot a Beretta AL390 with a Briley Hevi-shot extended turkey choke. I have been shooting this at Gobblers for the last 3 years. After killing 12 gobblers in that time frame, I have to say Hevi-shot is the best thing I have ever come across in my 20 years of turkey hunting. The stuff is plain lethal to turkeys and ducks. Your pattern looks awesome and you won't be disapointed this spring!

You can go to Nitrocomapny .com and see different patterns for different guns. The rhino choke with the nitro heavy shot is getting 320 pellets on a 12 inch circle at 40yds. That's awesome.
