Need mouth calling help
I've got the friction and box calls down pretty good, but I'm just beginning to try and learn the mouth call. Any advice for a beginner? What's the easiest way to learn how to make the right sounds? Instead of sounding like a wounded duck? I realize that it takes alot of practice, but I was just hoping for some advice. Thanks.

RE: Need mouth calling help
If you can manage to keep that thing in your mouth w/out gaggin' it is half the problem. If you are able to create sound with it you are half way there. Try saying "Kee-Yote" with it in and you will get the basic sound. To get a put try a quick "duke". Hope this helps.

RE: Need mouth calling help
I just bought my 1st mouth call last week and I am already getting the hang of it. I bought a Quaker Boy beginner call. If I'm not mistaken, I believe QB also sells this with a cassette for about $9. As far as videos go, I love the Primos "Mastering the Art" paks.

Keep practicing, thats the best advice that i can give. But on the topic of learning cassettes,H.S. Strut,Lohman, and primos all three make good cassettes for beginners.

PRACTICE
When I was about twelve, I went to a store and saw a mouth call. I bought it and took it home. I had never used one before, but I wanted to be able to. I just went home, put it in my mouth and practice for about 3 hours straight. I finally got the hang of it after about 2 1/2 hours. It took me another year of practice to get really good at it. Now, I would consider myself to be a MASTER of the mouth call. I am not big headed, but I am really really really good with a mouth call. It is almost impossible to learn by reading stuff. Heck, I have been trying to get my best friend to master a mouth call for over a year now. It is HARD to do, and it takes alot of practice. I naturally just picked it up. This isn't the case in most situations. Just don't give up, a mouth call is an excellent call to have. It is just as important as having a box and slate call. Try cutting the diaphram to fit your mouth. Or get a video from H.S. Strut.

RE: Need mouth calling help
DON'T RELY ON TRYING TO LEARN ON JUST ONE CALL
YOU MAY OR MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SOUND GOOD ON ONE PARTICULAR CALL---SINGLE REED, TWO, THREE, SPLITS, V'S,ETC.. PICK UP THREE OR FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES AND PRACTICE..PRACTICE... PRACTICE. TRIMMING THE CALL TO FIT YOU HELPS A BUNCH |
RE: Need mouth calling help
Hey Buck Magnet,
I need help on making the "purr" sound. What advice can you give me. I have the H.S. Strut video Mouth Calling 101 and thought it was a very helpful video on mouth calling. I'm using the tip about making the "machine gun" sound with your tounge and I'm getting the purr but, I can't get that little soft note after the purr. Any suggestions? Should the tounge be back on the call alot? Thanks in advance |
RE: Need mouth calling help
Easiest way I know to purr is to use your lips get them to vibrate. Thats the easiest way I know to purr lightly.
Hope that helps:) |
RE: Need mouth calling help
One tip I got from a video, don't try to make turkey calls right away. Practice making different tones & pitches. Once you can go from low to high and back down realtively smoothly, try a few yelps. Listen to tapes, videos, CD's etc.
I'm practicing purring now, and not very good at it. |
