Is gun camo really necessary?
I am contemplating where to get a new gun with or without camo. Is it worth the huge markup for a gun with camo? Is a gun without camo that noticable to a turkey?

RE: Is gun camo really necessary?
Factory camo guns aren't necessary, but I'd suggest getting a matte finish for sure. A shiny finish in the sun will give you away in a hurry.

A Remington 870 Express or Mossberg 835 in Woodland camo aren't priced too bad.

it dont have to be camo'd but i think it makes it look really cool, its whatever you like. i would get a matte finish if you dont get a camo.

i would look at it this way, if your gonna spend over $300 for a gun, whats another $40 for a camo finish. its like buying a $800 rifle and putting a $50 scope on it.
on the other hand, if your getting a good deal on a used gun, you can always camo it up later. ARO http://www.hunting-pictures.com/memb...hanesmith.html |
RE: Is gun camo really necessary?
I bought my 870 with a matte finish and camo taped. It seems to work for me, it's taken three turkeys in the past three years.

It looks cool but I do not think it is absolutely necessary. I have a matte finish and it works for me.

RE: Is gun camo really necessary?
After this past deer season, I'm even starting to wonder how important camoflauge is in the first place. I called flocks of hens within 10 yards on 5 different occasions, with different conditions each time. With blaze orange on, these birds didn't seem to care until I started cutting rapidly and loudly.
I've never camoed my gun and have always taken turkeys---not too important. I'm starting to think more & more that turkeys are just like deer---they depend more on improper movement than on actual sight. Hence, you can have a shiny gun barrel but you better not move it too much, or that big ol' Tom will be outta' there!!! |
