I have an old 16 gauge and put a camo sock on it. It doesn't look all that great, but then again, it isn't there for looks on my gun.

You can spend the extra $$ to get a "real pretty" designer camo OR you can save your money and do it yourself with camo tape, paint, or a gun sock. Much cheaper and just as effective.

RE: Is gun camo really necessary?

Years ago I had a big ole longbeard hang-up just out of gun range after he had come about 200 yards up the ridge to my set-up.I couldn't figure out for the life of me why he had hung up after he was hotter than a firecracker covering that 200 yards in a matter of seconds. After he had walked off i looked the situation over.I was set-up facing into the sun behind a old blown down log with my gun over the top of the log.I walked out to where the bird was leaving my gun behind ,and looked back at where I was set-up and the glare off the shiny barrel of my gun was like somebody had a mear shining it at me.There was no doubt in my mind why the bird hung-up.As a result my gun has been camoed ever since. They still hang-up but now I know it aint because of the glare off my gun.My opinion is camo it or a matte finish.Dont wait till a smart ole gobbler spooks off because you didn't as I did!Live and learn!:)

I bought a Mossberg 835 Woodland Camo for $400. Or you can by one cheaper and use camo tape.

ASAT Camouflage makes 3-D leafy tape that is sure to break up the outline of any gun or bow. The cloth leaves come in sort of a zigzag shape on double stick tape that stays on and yet is removable. The leaves will move at the same frequency as the surrounding foliage. It does a great job that doesn’t have to be permanent or have the adhesive bleed through like regular medical camo tape. IMHO if it's a working gun and not a show-off gun, go ahaed and get it camo from the factory. I had a brain fart a few years ago and had my 870 PAINTED. <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> Don't know where my head was. Apparently somewhere in the vecinity of the aforementioned analogy.

Anyway ... I spent this week stripping the paint off the wood and metal and refinishing the stocks. Will get the metal parts re-Parkerized some day after turkey season.

Does camo make a difference to a turkey? Not in my opinion. A glare from the sun would though. If you don't get a camo gun, at least get a matte finish on it.
