RE: Camping out??
I camp out when we go to South Dakota.Closest motel is about 35 miles from where we hunt.Get to sleep in a little later and stay out roosting birds at night.Sitting around the camp fire and shooting the bull with freinds is half the fun of the trip!

RE: Camping out??
Camping for turkey season? You bet! Sometimes tent, sometimes S-10 bed with ill-fitting topper covered by a tarp. I'll be camping for every hunt this year, unless I get lucky between now and April finding local private land to hunt for a few days.
gobble stopper, I feel your pain. Tough to get accurate info on public land here, too. Managers on the smaller areas were pretty helpful, but the Forest Service folks were more secretive than the CIA. Tons of national forest here, but still not sure exactly where I can camp/hunt. |
RE: Camping out??
YEP. i dont rough it anymore. 26' prowler camper. all the comforts of home. heck its more comfortable than home and quieter too. i'll pull it up the day before opening day and cook on the open fire and drink a sud or two. then catch the news on tv and turn in under my realtree hardwoods comforter. ummmm i can't wait. don't really care if i get a tom or not just to be out in the woods. i know it doesnt sound like roughing it but you should try it sometime.

RE: Camping out??
IT'S GREAT!! BEST TIME TO BE IN THE WOODS. LAST YEAR TWO
BUDDIES AND MYSELF WERE CAMPING NEXT TO A HAY FIELD, WHEN ABOUT 30 MIN. BEFORE DARK 5 OR 6 HENS CAME OUT INTO THE FIELD WE SET AND WATCHED THEM UNTIL THE FLEW UP TO ROAST. THEN ONE OF MY BUDDIES GAVE AN OWL HOOT AND THE TOM THAT STAYED IN THE TIMBER BUSTED OUT. THEY HAD ROASTED ABOUT 75 OR 100 YARDS FROM OUR CAMP. THE NEXT MORNING IT WASN'T MUCH OFA WALK TO THE FIRST BIRD, HAD THIS ONE TAGGED BY GOOD DAY LIGHT. GOOD LUCK |
RE: Camping out??
Nothing quite like a turkey camp for me. We will have 9 in our camps this year, part of them being the Mathews Prostaff, so its not that uncommon to find campers during turkey season, now the question is, can you get enough rest to go out and chase the gobblers all morning?

RE: Camping out??
I have camped in the past for turkey hunting. This year we found a cabin to rent. It's not camping out but it is still turkey camp.

RE: Camping out??
I camp out every year for turkeys just like I do for deer and elk. I drive about 200 miles to the area I like to hunt. I take a weeks vacation, my wall tent and gear and a couple of friends and I am set. Like some of the rest said, sitting around the campfire and hearing turkeys gobble is pretty cool!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Camping out??
For turkey hunting, I've camped most of the years that I went. Sometimes solo and other times with friends or relatives. As long as it doesn't rain constantly, it's a great way to go. The last 2 years, I've has access to a friend's vacation home on a lake. It's a 4500 foot timber frame home with jacuzzi's, fireplaces in the bedrooms and every convenience you could want. If he gives me the keys again this year, I'll be "roughing it" in there again this year!

RE: Camping out??
We have a cabin near the property we hunt so that's where we stay. There is a public area near though and many turkey hunters camp out there all the time. It's right down in the middle of the rolling timber hills. I think it'd be really neat to stay there.
