10 pt - - Every time I hear from you 10 gauge guys it gets me more to thinking about going with the Big 10 also. Ever try the Nitro Ammo 3 oz loads for the 10 gauge? (Then again, how dead do you need the bird to be?) - - Good Hunting!, - - Pointshoot
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
Went to the range today and shot my browning gold 10ga, and I was very happy with the results. I knew that #5's shot best out of it but I did not know whether to shoot the 2oz or the 2-1/4oz. I was using a truglo choke and winchester shells. I shot once at 30 yards and they both shot about the same, siving the paper. The turkey target was coverered in shot. Then I went out to 40 yards and was very happy with what I saw. Using winchester #5's 2oz of shot I put 18 in the vitals and 44 total in his head and neck counting the vital shots. The 2-1/4oz put 10 in the vitals and a total of 38 in his head and neck at 40 yards. So I think I will go with the 2oz load. They are faster and they patterned just a tad better. Also on the 2oz of shot I put 249 shots on the paper and the 2-1/4oz shot put 220. So I believe I will go with the 2oz load of #5's.

|
RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
FYI to all 10 ga owners and pointshoot777(future 10 ga owner), i recieved an email from ray at nitro and he informed me that you can mix up a box of shells to try different loads and shot sizes. i wanted to try 2 of each shot size but he said you can only get a minimum of 5 in each shot size per box. maybe if we put the heat on them a little to "mix it up a little more" they will break down and give in to our demandsjust kidding ray. from all ive read on here and other boards i think these shells are at least worth the time and $$$ to try em out. im going to order some this week, about $150.00 worth, to test them for myself in my sp-10 and i will surely post the results. safe hunting.

RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Hello everyone Im back from last year. Im the guy that shoots the 341/2 10 ga NE. Looks like your at it again. Go with the nitros because the factorys dont even come close. The hast is the best choke Ive tested so far.It beat the rino and kicks probably because the hast isnt ported.

RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
10 Point -
I first started thinking about the Big 10 when hunting Canadian geese this last season. The weather was too warm and there weren't as many birds. Those that were out there seemed to be much more nervous and wouldn't come in very close. We had to pass shoot them from 40-45 yds plus with our 3 1/2" 12 gauge guns shooting steel shot. (In the past, we were able to bring them in much closer to our decoys.) Often it took several shots to put those big birds down, (undoubtedly our shooting could be vastly improved !) Anyway, one of the guys used a 10 gauge BPS and any goose within that 40-50 yard range, went down like a rock when hit by the 10.) I'm really looking at the new Browning Light 10. It would be an advantage when goose hunting and if I'm gonna buy one I might as well use it for turkeys too. The guy that I go hunting with has done lots of turkey hunting and guiding. He said the only gun he's seen that knocked a turkey down without any flopping around by the bird after the shot, - was taken by an SP-10. Good Hunting !, - - - Pointshoot aquote] Pointshoot777, no I have not tried the Nitro shells 3oz loads. I heard they pattern real good out of most guns. The only problem that I would see out of a load that heavy is it being slow. I don't think I need to try them Nitro loads because the Winchester #5's pattern excellent out of 10ga gold hunter. I have not taken a turkey with thid set up yet, but hopefully I will this spring. I use to use just the full choke and winchester #6's and Maytom talked me into buying a truglo choke tube and I am glad I did. With the full choke my pattern really started to open up at 40 yards, with the truglo choke it is still very dense. In my opinion, the 10ga is a great turkey gun, Yes it is heavy, but with the right choke and ammo, you can hammer them suckers. I hunt some fields that can produce some long shots. When I use to use a 3" mag I was affraid to shoot out there at 45-50 yards at a gobbler that is hung up, but now with this 10ga I have no doubt in my mind if one hangs up out there 45-50 yards that I can hammer him. If you have the money, give a 10ga a shot, you will be very impressed on how they shoot and pattern. [/quote] |
RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Gobble stopper - looking forward to hearing about your results with the Nitro in your SP-10. Especially interested in hearing about your recoil tolerance after patterning all those big boys!(Last year I patterned my 870 Super Mag pump gun and volunteered to pattern my brothers gun for him, too. So it was a day of 3 1/2" turkey loads. Big mistake ! I didn't set up right on my bench, leaned too far forward into the gun, and got a couple of good hard scope bites right in the forehead. Next time my brother can pattern his own d*mned gun and I'm going to take my time and spread the job out over plenty of time! Also, I'm not going to use the same kind of bench rest set up. Of course, if I go with a Light Gold 10 I'm talking about a gas gun vs. my old pump gun and a shotgun that weighs two pounds more than my old shotgun. I'd be curious to see how 3 oz. loads would feel through such a gun. Maybe someone can comment on that. Good Hunting!, - - Pointshoot

RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
pointshoot777,
i have fired several turkey rounds from my sp-10 so far. i can tell you that gun is a DREAM to shoot versus my UNPORTED mossberg 835 w/3 1/2" turkey loads. i can shoot about 5 rounds from the mossberg before i call it a day. the remington i think i could shoot all day with no problem the gas operated semi's really take alot of the recoil away from the shooter, not to mention it weighs 11 lbs. i made the mistake last year when i started to pattern my mossberg of leaning against a solid cement shooting bench. it was the one and only round i fired that day. with no give in my body the stock came back as far as it could then rode up my shoulder to say hi to my cheek. ive never been hit that hard in my life and i was involved in kick boxing for about 6 years. oh well you live and you learn i guess. im sure the 10 ga 3oz loads will kick more but i doubt as much as the mossberg. by the way i also have a digital camcorder so i will post a few of the targets for you to see or i could email them to you so i dont get tore up on this site like those poor other guys did. RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
gobble stopper, I have bought mixed boxes of loads from Nitro last year and this year and they let me get 2 of each shot size. Got my last box within the last 2 weeks. Either they are changing policy or you caught him on a bad day. I suggest you e-mail or call Sandy. She is great and will fix you right up however you want the order.
I shoot the 101L and it pushes 3 ounces out at 1200 feet per second. Not sure how that compares to factory loads. But mine are #4 nickel shot, so I'm not worried about energy. A tip on patterning. My SP10 is a relatively heavy gun and is gas operated. Even so, the 3 ounce loads are murder on your shoulder. I don't worry about that in the woods, cause you don't feel it. But at the patterning bench it can cause problems with jerking the trigger and flinching. I finally started carrying a heavy jacket to the range with me. I roll it up and put it between the gun and shoulder. Now I know this will not simulate field conditions exactly, but I figure it is best to have the gun steady and not pull off than otherwise. No jakes! Edited by - 10bore on 02/23/2002 23:50:27 |
RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Guys those 3 oz loads dont kick trust me .I just cant figure out when Im shooting sitting down why I can sometimes see my tennishoe go over the top of the barrel. There is the time I shot with my shoulder up against a tree and had a bruise the size of a grapefruit the next day. I must of fell and dont remember it. Who cares as long as the bird doesnt get back up.

RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Hey guys I'd like to see the ballistics on those 3 ounce loads!I can push 2 1/8 of lead at over 1300 fps that holds together pretty well.10 bore and Gobblestopper how does that 3oz load look on paper??Thanks:)

RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
bobgobble2,
"how do they look on paper?" dont know, havent shot them yet. from reading the posts above i dont think anyone else has either. looks like broken scope shot some but didnt mention what patterns he got, just a bruised shoulder. i will hopefully, if the weather cooperates, be shooting some regular (winchester, federal, reimgton)10 ga turkey loads tommorrow or tuesday. RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Thanks GS!I really would like to know how they pattern. If its possible I'd really like to know the ballistics on these loads too! Thanks

RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Bobgobble 2 I have shot a lot of nitros in the 3oz load and I wasnt kidding about the kicking,Actually I have had a quite a few put me on my back from a sitting position. Ok here is what I get from 40 measured yards with the barrel not hanging over. 3oz 101 L #4nickel with hast 685 I can put in the 180s in a 10in circle. With a win turkey head it has put 87 in the head and neck. I have patterned about all of rays 10 turkey loads. I have got all of the test patterns wrote down if anyone is interested. I like the larger shot. I have tested a lot of choke combos and probably shot about 75 of his shells. I take the weight out of my NE stock and that lightens it about 2 lbs I believe. I think 10 bore gets better than I do with the 101 Ls.

RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Broken scope is the a New England Firearms 10 ga your shooting? If so what choke do you have
|
RE: Patterned the 10ga today!
Mr Longbeard, yes its a NewEnglander with a long barrel and a 685 hastings choke. I also have a 675 choke that does very well. I also have a factory short barrel that I test often but havent found a load choke combo that will match the long barrel. I dont care what anyone says about long barrels not shooting better I think they will. The Outlaw Turkey Shoots have a 5 or 6 ft limit for a reason. I think it really depends on the gun.
