Well, It was pouring today at 4:30 so old soft butt , said lets take the house blind and sit at a field edge. The wife and I get to the setup location and setup and place out 5 Decoys, 3 Hens and 2 Jakes. We settle back for a wait and watch.
As we sit there in the rain , theres Deer walk by,Jackrabbits, skunks,Squirrels, coyote's 2 of them, and then out of the woods comes a Hen, she walks right up to the decoys and carried on across the field. Sound was quiet with No Gobbles early, but around 8:00am as the thunder moves in, we hear birds gobbling out away all the way around us.
9:30 the cold was setting in and I said lets take a walk around the out side edge of the property, and off we went. (I thought in the back of my mined) But ( No) it wouldn't happen to me.
As we reach one side I hear a bird gobbling not far off, we move fast to the woods and setup beside a good tree. I start to call and the bird is coming, as I work him slow he moves into the 45-50 range and the woods are thick, we sit still and quiet, waiting out his view and then all of a sudden a Limb from a tree about 15 yards away breaks and falls 25feet to the ground with a thump! The bird quiets and seemed to disappear.
We get up and walk on, 300 yards on I find a feather patch, gobbler feathers every where, as I look on I find the gobbler, looks as if the coyotes got him, had the back eat right out of him and the thing was still warm.9 in beard and 1 1/4 spurs on the thing.
We carry on and I do some light calling, as we enter another field, I walk along the edge and call light and suttle. Then there's a gobbler that comes over a little rise and comes face to face with me , and he turns and runs , not one peep out of him [:@] man this is not working I said to my wife , I should have stayed in the blind ,instead of taking a walk.
Way we go again and start to head back towards the Blind, I start walking on the field edge of the same field as the blind, theres trees in a rocky area in the midle of the field that is between Us and the blind, so I can't see the blind yet , and the all of a sudden I hear a Gobble! NO WAY! I could not believe my eyes,,, and I guess you all know what I'm going to say ? YES! [:@] There's a Gobbler in the decoys out in front of the blind and we are 200 yards away !
I can't believe it! I said,,,,, we sat and tried to call the bird over to us and he would not for the life of him cross that field.[
]. The bird walked off and the the time ran out as it quites at noon. Boy I'm glad because I have had enuff for one day [&o] I want to go home and go back to bed. maybe things will get better...BT

Gotta love that! At least when it's happening to someone else.
I've heard of it happening so many times that now I'll put the decoys and lay them on the grouond if I decide to go for a walk. Just to prevent that situation from occurring.
Go get them tomorrow!

Whew...after your Spring so far, a story like this coerces my intellect into thinking that your are not Super Turkeyslayer afterall, but merely human...

adrian, sounds like a great hunt with alot going on and im sure you and your wife enjoyed looking at all those critters.i always remind myself in the pouring rain its only water.i read a recent article called baiting the trotline, retracing your steps out of the field silently and carefully for that gobbler that worked his way in long after you picked up.i called from a location this year, kept walking, came back to sit and wait,a bird gobbled and five minutes later it was over.makes me wonder how long it can take a wary longbeard to come in.

LOL , I have to say this was the first time I have ever used a Blind of this type. before I walked away I looked at the decoys and thought [&:] No I just can't see it [8D], so off we went. I have to say it did kinda looked neet looking at the setup from a distance. It gives one a different perspective on Blind hunting thats for sure.
Yes , LB I did keep them , thought they would be a good tool to add to my box of items that I do Seminars with, that way I don't have to risk having a beard or spurs of my own walk away at a show
