Will a jake "put"

I've only turkey hunted for 3 years, but I've always been under the impression that only hens would "put". Well, this morning I had a jake within about 30 yards and it was "putting" away. Was this a jake or could it have been a bearded hen?

A "putt' is basically the sound they make to warn of danger.

I am new to this game. I always figured that would be called a cutt. I guess a putt and cutt is totally different.

I've heard all turkeys put. Even toms. Toms will yelp too. All turkeys can vocalize different ways.

Cutts and putts are two totally different comunitcations-

Cutting is done by hens when they are very excited, or in some cases aggrevated at other birds normally a raspy series of clucks put together..

I'm sure somebody here can post a site that has turkey vocabulary in it for you to identify the different sounds.. If not get you a CD or tape from Midwest Turkey call supply

Hope that helps
