Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

More luck needed!

Default More luck needed!

It has been a slow week. No gobbles until this a.m.

I met some guys working a hunting show back in March. One called and asked me if I wanted to go with him today while his buddy tried to film. I was excited. They had worked some birds in a field last week. Anyway, we got on a gobbling bird this morning and we set up on him at about 125 yards. He hammered at my crow call about 5 different times as we moved toward him.

There was a farm road between us and him and I expected him to come down the road. Anyway, directly behind us about 500 yards a bird was going nuts. He would gobble at my calls but the bird we sat up on would not answer me. I was sitting on the same tree as the camera man, but I couldn't see the guy that was our shooter. Anyway, the bird behind us would gobble and sounded 500 yards away then gobble and sound 150 yards away. I asked the camera guy if that bird was coming, but then he would gobble 5 times from 500 yards away.

What I didn't realize is that it was 2 birds. I hit the call one time and he gobbled on top of us from directly behind. He actually walked into about 12 yards, but got nervous when he didn't see a hen. The shooter couldn't turn to kill him.

I let about 15 minutes pass and hit the call again. The bird from 500 yards away gobbled at us. We still had not heard a peep from the bird we set up on in front of us since we had sat down to hunt. I called aggressive again and the bird in front of us fired a gobble in our direction. He was only about 80 yards away, about 5 minutes passed and he is trotting down the road. I figured he was dead, I heard the shooter say there he is and the camera man replied I can't get on him just kill him. When he got to 30 yards he stopped and got nervous at me and the camera man sitting on the same tree. He turned to ease away. I yelped loudly to stop him and expected a shot. Nothing! Eventually he got to nervous and trotted off. I didn't realize the shooter didn't have is gun up and on the turkey. So in an hour 2 birds in easy shotgun range and no feathers. I love this game!
