if you have no private land to hunt and must hunt state land, I wouldn't even bother with the first week. Let the first week warriors have there fun and things will clear out. The birds will start to settle back down by the second and third week and will be easier to call in. Also if you can hunt all day, try hunting in the afternoons.

Find some different land. Drive a little further to some more obscure public land. Stop by some farms and talk to some land owners. You might just be surprised!! Especially if you make it clear that you are only interested in turkey hunting. Alot of landowners that would NEVER give permission to a stranger for deer will let someone in for turkeys, if they dont hunt themselves.

good luck

buy a can of pink/purple paint and a paintbrush and GO TO IT!! ;) On second thought, I would either wait till later in the season or i would just hunt from 9 am till dark, might be better off then anyways!

Work the outside edge of the management unit if at all possible. Calling should be short and quiet, do not get into hammering birds as most do. Look for feeding areas on the outside points. Most presured birds in these type areas will head out as soon as the presure starts...BT

i have always hunted public land for turkeys.there are only two ways i know of to beat the crowd:1] hunt during the week and2] hunt after 11.00 am.i know it is difficult for the average working man to hunt during the week.i save up personal days and vacation days.REMEMBER: most hunting is done on weekends and holidays on public land.

It was suggested to me once to tie an orange tape or orange rope around the tree that you are sitting against.

I'd either try during the week or check out a topo map and try to find a way to get in behind the crowd. Maybe you can find a little "oasis" that is hard to reach from the main parking areas.
