what gun you shoot?
I need some ideas on a gun to buy.
|
RE: what gun you shoot?
Remington 870! I have an old express. Its over 20 years old, and I still love it. If I were to buy new, just for turkey hunting, I'd get an 870 turkey gun. I wouldn't care if it shot 3.5" or just 3" shells, as 12 gauge 3" magnums pack enough punishment for my shoulder. If you want it for deer and turkey, I'd consider an express combo. It would come with a 20" smoothbore slug barrel or a rifled slug barrel and a 28" vented rib barrel. 28" is a bit long for turkeys, but it does the job. Just add choke tubes and its good for anything you want to hunt with a shotgun.

RE: what gun you shoot?
remington 11-87...
|
RE: what gun you shoot?
If the gun Is only gonna be used for turkey hunting the mossberg 835 will throw a better pattern than any gun out there and is indestructible. I've been pleased with mine

RE: what gun you shoot?
Remington 870 for a pump or a Remington 11-87 for an automatic. Both offer excellent value for the dollar.

RE: what gun you shoot?
FOr turkeys I recommend a pump gun because they are lighter, so you don't have to tote that extra weight around all morning. They do kick a little more, but in a good year you will only fire your gun 3-4 times in the field.
That said the best gun IMHO on the market for turkeys right now is the mossberg 835. It is a great low price, and shoots tighter than any gun I have ever seen. My best friend bought one last spring new for $210 and just had a custom choke tube made for it. That bad boy will put 97% of its pattern in a 3 foot circle at 45 steps. Perfect uniformity. Only downside is that his pattern at 15-20 steps is about the size of a baseball, so he has little or no margin for error. The 835 kicks like a mule too, but for turkeys, your adrenaline is running so high you don't notice. I love my 870 personally and I use it for ducks and turkeys. I would stay away from the 11-87 as all of the ones I have come in contact with are very high-maintainance. You have to clean them rigorously after every shooting to keep them from jamming. When I say rigorously, I mean down to the screw and taking out all the springs and everything. They are also a little heavy for my liking for turkey hunting. The Browning BPS is another fine choice. Make sure the gun fits you right!! Thats the most important thing. Andy |

RE: what gun you shoot?
i have a remington 870 express mag turkey gun...12 ga...only takes 3 inchers but its called a mag....it has the camo stocks and a 21 inch barrel...light as heck and is nice to carry and manuver in the woods....and it doesnt kick as bad as youd think.....i shoot 3 inchers and they dont bother me....then again i thought my friends 338UM was fun to shoot...and it patterns like you wouldnt believe shooting the extended turkey choke reminton had in it...its my favorite turkey gun.....and i used to hunt with a mossberg.....they are to heavy and too bulky....i retired mine to small game hunting and maybe deer hunting if my area goes slug gun only......which rumor has it may.....it feels like a little kids gun but is full sized....i love it......

RE: what gun you shoot?
I use an 870 express mag. I painted it camo and it works great. I just wish I had a shorter barrel on it. The standard bbl is 28" plus the turkey choke tube.

RE: what gun you shoot?
I just got the new Mossberg 935 autoloader for turkey hunting this spring, on sale at Cabela's . It has a 22" barrel, turkey choke, sling, gun safety lock and case, in Mossy Oak New Break Up (barrel, stock and forepiece). I patterened it with the choke that came with the gun, not the greatest pattern at 40 yards, plenty of kill power at 20 and 30 yards, so I ordered a Rhino .695 choke and some Nitro 4x5x7 HeviShot to see if that will make it better. I'm also planning to polish the barrel as discussed elsewhere on this forum.

RE: what gun you shoot?
I love Brownings, but for deer and turkeys I am now shooting Remingtons. You can get them with a low-gloss finish that wont spook your target, and they cost less. If you can afford it the 1187 Special Purpose Super Mag is great. If your budget is tighter then an 870 Express Magnum will probably do everything you need.
|
RE: what gun you shoot?
H & R 3 1/2 inch mag with Mad Max .655 and Winchester 2 oz HV turkey loads, #5's or my own reloads, #6 copper. Light to carry, kicks like a Mule!!!!!
|
RE: what gun you shoot?
I own one of the first Mossberg 835 pump shotguns. I've used the Xtra full choke tube that came with the gun. I shoot #4 Winchesters, not the high velocitys. I'm trying the Madd Max tube this year, the .690 constriction for 4&5's. Haven't patterned it yet, but we will soon....
Gobble Gobble |
RE: what gun you shoot?
I shoot a AL390 Beretta 12, I had dipped in New MO BU with a Briley Turkey HS choke. I reload my own shells 3" HS #5 . This is my bad weather gun. When the weather is nice I shoot a Knight TK2000 smokepole w/120gr powder 2.5 oz of #5.
