I've never used my 20 gauge for turkeys but I would imagine that 20-25 would be a good distance to bring them in before making the shot and 30 would probably be the max. I'm going to get a turkey choke for my Remington as my girlfriend will be going on her first hunt this spring. Seems the closer they get the more excitement there is...

2 years ago , Guided a woman that was using a 20ga and had the same shells. We worked this Tom for about 3 hours and he was a tough bird. He would stay out in a field and strt and gobble, well with the knowledge and quick thinking ,we got setup on he's travel route and he move towards us. The bird moved right out in front of us and I guessed the shot for 35yds. her husband told me the gun would shoot out to 40yds. This is the chance being he was not coming any closer. A standing head high shot ,she aimed well and Bang! the bird went into the air and flew off. I paised the after shot and the bird was at the 40 yd mark. The leased to say I was not impressed with the Gun, after looking at the gun she had only a full choke in the gun. I would suggest if your shooting a 20ga find a Turkey choke before trying to pattern...BT

A 20 gauge is good within it's limits . My son uses a Remington . We had an extra full choke custom made . If you are going to use a 20 gauge I would suggest Remingtons new heavy loads . They are a little expensive but they are awesome .

The 20 gauge like any gun is limited by the pattern it shoots. It's impossible to say with your set up until yoou get to the pattern board. The #4 shot in the 20 gauge would be lethal beyond 40 yards. But will the pattern be sufficient to that distance with a standard full choke? I'd bet against it.

My daughter's 20 gauge is good out to 35+ yards with a hastings turkey choke and #6 shot in Fed 3". She's averaging 15 lethal(brain & Spine) hits at 35 yards. I've shot it out to 40 and have average 6 hits in the vitals. But I don't like 6 shot out of any gun at that range.

I hunt with a Mossberg® Mdl 500 in 20GA. Because you have less shot (1¼oz) in a 3"Mag vs 12Ga 3"Mag (2oz) I limit my range to 30yds. That is self imposed. I use a Hastings® Super Full Extended Turkey Choke. IN MY GUN #5 & #6 pattern exceptionally well. No 4 shot patterned very poorly. Your gun may pattern #4's well; you must experiment & see. My load of choice is Federal Premium Grand Slam® 1&5/16oz Copper Plated #6.

My son uses a 20GA also (Winchester Pump). Remington 1¼oz #5 are what pattern the best for him.

I read an article in the Wisconsin State Journal (maybe you can find it online) yesterday (Sunday) that the CEO of the Wild Turkey Federation has been using a twenty gauge exclusively for the past 7 years in multiple states. He is confident it the 20 to make 40 yd. kills on Turkeys and has done so on several occasions.

I started hunting with an 1100 Lt 20. We have Briely chokes in it and with an xtra full it is only good out to 35 yards, and even that is almost too iffy to chance. It can usually put 4-5 in the vitals at 35. Albeit, its a 2 3/4" gun and this is with #6s.

It can do it, just not past 35.

I have a 20 that will shoot out to 35 yards with a Rhino choke and # 5 shot and do a good job. I’ve patterned it out to 40 and can get 3 to 4 in the kill zone but I wouldn’t count on it in the field the pattern is just too loose at that distance. I did try some Nitro shells I got at the NWTF convention this year and out of five shots I only got one that I felt acceptable at 40 yards and that’s at 4 bucks a shot! I’m giving up on making it a turkey gun I just don’t have the confidence in it or maybe my SBE has colored my expectations of what it can do. So if want to try a 20-gauge Rhino choke with your Remington I have one.

Just a note that I remembered in the article. He uses #6 hevishot, 3"mags, although he has used regular #6's in 3" to kill out to 40 as well.

I think the biggest measure of the use of a 20 would be what it does on a patterning board. My wife uses a 2 3/4" Remington Youth Sports model 20 gauge autoloader with 1 1/8th oz high velocity lead #4 shot, and a Remington Extra Full choke tube. I've patterned that gun and I won't let her shoot at a turkey that is beyond 30 yards, as 30 yards is really a maximum effective kill range for that gun, shell and choke combo. Still, it is a deadly and effective gun at 30 yards or less. Last year at 15 yards she "no-flopped" her tom!!!

My 20 guage Charles Daly field model with 2 3/4" #6s and a full choke will take their head clean off at 20 yards . The pattern opened unacceptably at 30 yards so I ordered an Undertaker turkey choke from Bass Pro Shops and will increase the shot size to #4s .

first thing is to pattern the gun with different shells at different yardages.
then you will know "Yourslef" what it will do.
That being said,I had an over and under 20 ga. over 22 mag.an awsom little gun.the max range from that gun was 30 yards.I used 3" #6 copper plated.I took several birds at 30 yards or less.

the real game is to get them into the best range you can,"CLOSE" is the way I like it.;)[8D]:D

i use a charles daly field model with winchester #5 3inch shells. it is good at 30 maybe 40 yards. i use a turkey choke the undertaker it does a great job

In the Hunter Specialities® Video "So You Want To Be A Turkey Hunter" Matt Morret Guides co-owner Carmen Forbes. She uses a 20Ga and puts on the best shot of the whole tape. An Iowa Eastern I think. Later in the video a guy using a 20GA is guided by Eddie Salter. It was either the man you referred to above (Kleck?) or Carmen's husband David. I'll try to dig it up & find out for sure.

A friend of mine just bought his daughter a Benelli M1 20 gauge and called comp-n-choke, they told him what choke to get and to shoot federal 3 inch #5. She has killed 2 turkeys, one at about 25 and the other at about 35. Her father dropped one at 51 steps. Recoil is like a 22 and it only weighs about 6 lbs, loaded. I am definitely thinking of getting one for myself instead of the heavy 12 gauge auto I use.

The main thing is to pattern YOUR gun to see how it shoots. Will a 20 ga kill a turkey at 40 yds.? Absolutely. I have put 18 pellets of #6 hevi-shot in a 3" circle at a measured 40 yds. with a FULL choke. But remember each gun & choke combo is different. Therefore, PATTERN your gun. A 20 ga & a 12 ga pellet at the same velocith hit with the same energy.

As mentioned, regardless of gauge the pellets will hit with the same power if going the same velocity, but pattern is the key. I killed several turkeys with a 20 before I could take a 12, and my brother did also. He shot one the farthest, about 32 steps, and it dropped immediately, but flopped around immediately and for a few minutes like it just wasn't quite nailed enough. We used both 3" 5's and 6's. I think 4's are restricting your pattern a bit much, as you are already restricted by going with a 20.

We used Rem 870 youth guns with standard full choke.

WELP ADVICE CAN ONLY TAKE YOU SO FAR. My suggestion is to get out there and pattern your gun yourself and find out the hard way. The proof is in the pudding, so get out there and try some different shot and get the best one for you.
