Foggy Mountain Bird Down.....New Jersey
The morning drive was exciting, saw many deer and almost whacked a 250 lb bear on Rt.94, near the Warren/Sussex Border.
I went to the same spot I shot my bird on Monday, got settled in about 0450, I didn't bring the blind, I was think cause of the fog it would be run and gun.
Just at sunrise a bird sounds off within 100 yards of me, he and I talked to each other on/off for about an hour. Things went silent when just after 0700 I hear a hen, and the gobbler is sounding off. She is getting closer to me, I can see her she is about 80 yards away and very vocal, so I started talking to her getting her pissed off and gobbler still sounding off but he's strutting away at about 75 yards, he never came closer. The hen is looking for me, she loops around 100 yards and comes to within 30 yards. She then heads off and becoming silent, so from time to time the gobbler and I chatting, but then I see him walking towards the last location I heard the hen he's 100 yards away....I waited sillently for 20 mins, now the game of run and gun is on......I'm heading towards the area I think he's heading, from time to time I hear crows he sounds off, this is great cause I pin point this SOB !!! So I then hear him seems to be within 100 yards so I sit down against a tree, things go silent for sometime, I then hear a gobbler somewhat behind me, so I have two in the area....So I start heading towards the bird behind me, I walked about 80 yards and I need water, I then hear a bird right in front of me down a small hill. I set up quickly against a big tree....I gave a few yelps, BAM the hen responded and the camera went on.....He also Gobbled!!! She is coming and walks to my left and is at 20 yards talking and I see him coming.....The Remington 1187 Super Magnum Barked, the Winchester LongBeard XR found it's target at 43 yards....
8" beard, 1" spurs, 21 lbs.
