Where has everybody gone? Kinda sad

I love this site and these message boards. I have been a fairly active member for over 11 years now and man has this place died the last 3 to 4 years. I'm not sure why or where everybody went but it is kinda sad. This turkey forum used to be full of hunters, especially in the spring and the archery forum was hopping year round. This year we were only able to have 5 teams in the contest and my team only had 7 or 8 active members. I dont have the answers but I really hope it picks back up. Maybe if we were on tapatalk that would help with so many people on smart phones?:confused0024:

Anyway, you've probably heard enough of my rambling. Just wondering where some of the old timers have gone and hope we can keep getting some new members on here..

Topgun 3006 06-01-2015 05:05 PM

I've only been on the site for 4 1/2 years and it seems like there are plenty of active members posting, but I have no idea how it was in the 7 or 8 years before that when you joined to say what you are.

Timbrhuntr 06-01-2015 05:26 PM

Ya its pretty sad jepcho ! This and the bowsite were the first hunting sites I ever joined. I used to enjoy coming to this site until recently and was about to quit altogether but decided to hang around a bit longer for a stupid reason and its made me bitter towards this site I hope things pick up for your sake but I am now moving on !

Sheridan 06-01-2015 05:48 PM

I can't remember when I first came on to Huntingnet,

However I have found this site a wealth of knowledge over the years, and want to thank all of you for that !!!

One thing; There are 14 different ways to say the same thing, you choose the way you'd like to say it (or hear it ) ??

Topgun 3006 06-01-2015 05:56 PM

It would seem like someone that is complaining about the site not being very active and has been on it for over 12 years would have a lot more than 283 posts if they were really interested in it staying good! :s13:

jepcho 06-01-2015 07:05 PM

It was never my intention to start am argument or anything. I'm not complaining, and it is true that there are still some great people and some great new people. There is a lot of information on here. But the numbers are definitely way down and I just think it's kind of a bummer. There was just that much more info on here years back. I was just stating that fact and kinda wondering why that's the case and if there was anything that might change it.

I too am thankful for everybody on here and hope nobody thinks I'm putting anyone down or complaining.

Topgun 3006 06-01-2015 07:34 PM

My comments were not meant for anything you said jepcho! Could be it less active because there are so many more hunting websites than the first few years you were on here?

jalvja 06-03-2015 01:36 AM

I am one of the original members here.I've belonged to this site since it was just a few weeks old.We had a great group here.We had alot of fun.Lots of jokin around,Lots of turkey experience but the main thing is there was no competition among us.Just a group of guys who loved to hunt turkey. Then a few members showed up who thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. If they shot more birds than someone it was cause they were better. If someone shot more than them it was cause that person was huntin TAME birds. There were lots of personal attacks and most of the original guys just got fed up and left.I still check the place out but very seldom make a post. That's pretty much it.Oh yeah,If you notice my join date as 2003,It's because that was the last of two meltdowns this site had.Anti's hacked the site a couple of times.

Well spoken jalvja. Been a very long time since the old gang was here. Like you, I try to stop in from time to time as well. haven't seen BT post in quite some time either. Did you guys hook up this season in PA?

Phil from Maine 06-03-2015 04:20 AM

I have been on this site for quite some time as well. But, not as long as some of you have been that is for sure.. I am not on here as much as I used to be. I do however come back for the turkey contest and find it a lot of fun.. Whether I get any birds or not does not matter a lot. I have been in some of those not so great situations as well. So I faded away for the most part. After the turkey contest is over I will drift along once again only to return for the contest or a little knowledge on something..

I do find that this site can be a wealth of knowledge for anyone that needs it or wishes to explore other ways of doing things.

RockyMtnGobblers 06-03-2015 08:56 AM

I joined in 2004 under gobblertracker, the last two years seam as though the posting has slowed and so mine has also but one reason for me and poss. others is I know a heck of a lot more now and although I love to help new hunters they are the same questions with almost the same answers so I respond less to posts than I used to.
I love the spring turkey contest and I am grateful for the help I got so many years ago in finding the best loads for my shotgun, info on where to look for turkeys and other tips on hunting tactic's from caring sportsmen on this site. It was the hunters on this site and myself that taught me to hunt turkeys, I'll always be here sharing the comradery and helping new hunters with there questions and asking my own I'm sure as we always learn something new. Thanks...... now I'm addicted.

I know that there has been a lot of that on here, and it's really unfortunate. I myself have always just stayed away from threads when they start to go south but have kept trying to come back. Guys like you and maytom and some of the originals helped me a lot when I first came on here. When I first joined this site I had yet to kill a turkey, and since then I've killed multiple birds every year. While I believe that the first 4 years I hunted and never killed a bird, along with my experience since then, has made me into the turkey hunter I am today, I definitely got a lot of help from guys on here that has helped in my success. I had questions and always got good helpful responses and also was able to just talk to some good ol turkey hunters and I am appreciative of that for sure. There still are definitely some really good guys on here but I know there will always be some bad apples in the bunch.

I can see this too. I just love hearing others stories too and doesn't seem like we get much of that anymore.

I like this site too but with work especially this time of year makes it tough to spend time on a computer.

Ridge Runner 06-03-2015 05:43 PM

been here since '98, don't post as much as I use to, too much drama and BS to deal with, how ya been Jim?
RR

RIStrutStopper 06-03-2015 06:40 PM

I used to visit and post a bunch here too. Things have slowed way down. I do still participate in the Turkey and Archery contests. I'd probably visit more often if things would pick up a bit.

gjersy 06-03-2015 08:22 PM

Social media sites like Facebook take forum members away also. I'm on a couple Hunting/Working dog forums and thats what they attributed the lack of activity on anyway.

Good to see to see you here jep!

And just disregard a few here who have come as of late and think they know everything! Hardly ever offer a good word and just like to complain.

I think my biggest pet peeve on here was the disrespect shown by some.I've seen people post pictures of jakes only to have someone try to belittle them cause it was a jake.Length of shots is another point that gets people fired up.It's ok for us to disagree. But there is no reason for personal attacks. I got attacked on here once cause I used a gobble call to help me take a bird.I'm no dummy(matter of opinion) I know when and where I can use that call SAFELY.But this guy acted like I commited a crime.OK,My rant is over.:barmy::barmy::barmy:

Mojotex 06-06-2015 05:21 AM

I have not been on this forum all that long. I like it. As hunting forums go, this one is a darn good. Yep, there are a few issues now and then but tons of good advice. I have tried out the advice of several guys and for the most part the info has been spot on.

I try to offer advice based upon my first hand experience. And i hope that when I am not in agreement with others I hope that I have not come across poorly. I'm pretty much straight to the point and I know that can come across harsh at times. Anyway, good forum and hope it stays healthy.

Thanks Mojo and you are correct....reason I am here is to learn and help others not make the mistakes I made. That is how we learn.

And jalvja ~ I also use a gobble call at times as there is a place for it in the arsenal of coaxing Tommy Three Toes to you. I have had success when after using a hen call the boss hen just took the tom away. A Gobble call brought the hens back which brought the tom(s) into range. You do need to be careful. As you might call in other hunters but there is a time and place for everything.
Good to see you both back.

I know exactly what you mean. There were some guys on here that had no respect for others. I dont consider those types to be true turkey hunters. I hope most of those guys are gone and if not, I'd hope the moderators can do something about it. I think of myself as a turkey hunter, and I love to hear from and talk to other turkey hunters. Whether discussing strategies or telling stories, and as long as it's legal, for the most part I am going to happy for somebody no matter how they take a bird. Minus maybe roost shooting and rifle hunting, I've tried most strategies that are legal myself.

JW, glad to be here on this site. I still enjoy coming on here and especially being in the contest. Hopefully the numbers in that can pick back up. Wasn't too long ago and we had 20+ teams. It was still a lot of fun this year but slower with only 5 teams.

I don't remember when I joined but it was by far better back then. Problem now is a few that have joined recently seem to have a sarcastic answer for everything someone asks or shows off. Your right turkey contest used to be big here, now can't get anyone to join teams. Once the know- it-alls shut up or log out a decent conversation can be had. But some jack wagon telling me or someone else they're doing it all wrong but couldn't do it themselves is probably main reason people are leaving. Not hard to figure who you are either. There are some great people on here with a wealth of information willing to chime in and give a suggestion but some to quick to judge and prosecute.

Bingo well said +100
And there isn't much I can do about it but watch. Those users hover in the Gray area of the HNI Rules. Rarely do they have a good word for anybody but are the first to jump on the 'dog pile' and stir up trouble.
They are highly opinionated and to me it has chased people away!

That's a fact! Chased a good one away recently.

I just about fainted when I read this post and my name didn't pop up... I'm sure that's because BT didn't chime in lol...

Do miss the camaraderie of a select few here! The knowledge was priceless and still is to those who have had the patience to stick it out with the all knowledgeables!I'll stick to the turkey woods where I started in the first place,no better classroom in the world!Bigole gobblers have a positive way of keeping ya humble!!😉

Well I just happened back on this site while websurfing. I had forgotten about this one and I really don't recall when I was here last.
I'll make it a point to stop by much more often. It's good to see maytom still alive and kicking, that's a name I haven't seen in a loooong time.

Bocajnala 06-30-2015 05:55 AM

I'm not real active posting here in the turkey section because I only have 3 years and 1 bird experience, but I read here allot trying to learn. A few individuals have "chased" allot of the old and many of the new posters away. A new memeber signs up and makes a post and immediately gets jumped on by someone, no wonder they don't stick around. I stick around because there are some really good and knowledgeable posters here. And because I hope it improves.
I think *********** may be part of the issue too. SOme other forums seem MUCH easier to use on the smartphone than this one is. So I don't ever use this one from my phone.

I think every internet site has a couple of "know it all" types. This site just happens to be infested with a couple of guys that have nothing better to do with their lives.

I mostly ignore them but they are rough on anyone that does not acknowledge their wisdom in all matters.

bald9eagle 08-08-2015 12:51 PM

(Oh please, oh please don't let them be pointing at me)

It's been a while since I checked in. I use to come through here quite a bit but have slowed down as the board slowed down. I know myself and a couple of long timers here have had disagreements but I have never taken it personal. I don't like personal attacks either but I think that is the direction that we are seeing all of social media go. People don't respect each other anymore.

turkey harvester 08-17-2015 10:45 AM

From the looks of some of the posts I've just read on different topics, looks like the same dips**ts are still after it. I wonder if they have asked the question, why are we the only ones talking on here, hahaha.

JoeA 08-17-2015 12:38 PM

The decrease in participation in the spring contest is a bit of a downer. Is it because of social media? Fewer turkey hunters out there? As I understand it, wild turkey numbers are near, or at historical highs.

It was a bit harder than I thought, getting this year's stickers given away. I just dunno.
