Default Mossberg 500 Load Advice

I just got a Mossberg 500 Turkey model 12 gauge. It came with the factory XX-Full turkey choke. I know you're supposed to try a bunch of load/choke combinations but it's just not financially possible right now. Has anyone had any experience with a 500 and Winchester shells in general? I bought 2 boxes of the Winchester DoubleX, 3", 1125 fps, 2 oz. of #5 shot. Has anyone had experience with the DoubleX loads. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Your shotgun and shells is what my oldest son shoots with an Undertaker tube. It has mashed some heads. Furthest he shot a bird with it is @ 45 yards and had no problems.

I don't shoot the Winchester Turkey , I shoot either rem Turkey 2 oz #6 or fed 2oz #6. I like the never 2oz over the faster 1 3/4 oz shot. Should shoot them to find if shotgun likes them. 3 out of 4 of my Turkey guns like the rem premier Turkey the other likes the federals.

I hunt turkeys with my Mossberg 500 and the xxfull turkey choke. I have found that Federal 3in 2oz load 5 shot works the best. As for the Winchester they didn't preform well at all.

LOL!!! Come to think of it my buddy god rest his soul had a moss 500 and it too patterned like crap with Winchester turkey load... Come to think of it... It patterned everything pretty crappy... He put a hastings turkey choke in it and I think he finally got it to pattern out to 35 yards some what with some turkey load not sure which one... anyhow

I've got 4 turkey guns... 870 SM, 870 express, 11-87 SP and a NEF 10ga turkey...

All 4 of them pattern Winchester HV turkey loads out to 40-50 yards (excluding Hevi shot patterned best over all)

I've patterned every lead turkey load on the market and hands down Winchester shoots the best...

So read the post and make your desission

Good luck on your quest for the perfect turkey load!!!

If you've got 8 or 9 dollars and can find them buy a couple of Nitro shells.....you won't be sorry.

I get my best patterns out of my 500 with a star dot tube and federal turkey thug #5s. Best thing to do if you can is try a few different loads, it is really the only way to find out what your gun and choke like the best.

I shoot a 500 with the standard full choke. I currently shoot 3" Win SuperX #6, but have used #5 in the past. Kills them out to 40 yds no problem. I set up to get shots at less than 30, so I never really worried about trying for more range. May sound backwards, but if you don't see good results with your XX Full, try the standard full.
