I have had this conversation many times in the past, and would like to see what everyone's opinion is on if they feel that todays wild turkey is more cautious/smarter than the wild turkey of years gone by?<img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>Obviously this a question for those who've been fortunate to turkey hunt for awhile, but I do believe birds in high pressure areas our more cautious and able to recognize danger than those birds of yester year. What do all you veteran turkey hunters think?

Most definetly. I do a lot of hunting on public land and i have left a parking spot to go get something to eat or drink and 15 minutes later when i get back there is some one already hunting my spot. I have already left a spot after trying to shock gobble a bird and drove by that spot 5 minutes later and see a hunter pulling into the spot i just left. EASTERN WILD TURKEYS GET HAMMERED EVERY DAY OF THE SEASON!!!!!!!!

I think this is a pretty natural assumption. you really don't even have to hunt long. One season will show you this. Go hunt birds in the southern states that have had liberal bag limits and seasons for years. Then go hunt out west or up north where they are still drawing for tags. The turkeys will seem like a different species of animal.

I agree BG2,But I think there are alot of other factors involved too. For example. As the turkey population grew so did the number of hens so now a gobbler doesn't have to be as vocal to collect a group of hens.He can sit tight and wait for them to come to him.

I believe the main thing is more people in the woods("notice I said people,Not hunters"
.fifteen years ago I would hunt all season and see maybe 2 or 3 other hunters, now I see that many in a mornings hunt.
I know everyone has to learn hpw to hunt, but they should get with someone to learn from.not just go out and try to run one down,I mean that letteraly, last year my wife and myslef were working a bird,he was in sight 50 to 60 yrds.this guy came running in from the side and shot while on the run.needless to say the bird left.
with people like that the birds are a little more cautious.
I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest
remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.
