Turkey slams

How many have achieved the grand slam, royal slam, and world slam. I have only harvested two of the sub-species, but definitley want to achieve several slams. Good luck to everyone this turkey season.

Turkey Goddess 03-28-2011 04:47 PM

I'd love to know who's done it too!!!

Kim :)

Hers is a pic of my bowslam mounts. The bases are the outline of the states. My ultimate goal is getting one in as many states as I can with the bow.

Adrian J Hare 03-28-2011 05:43 PM

I've done the grand about 10 -15 times but never kept count. I looked inot the Royal but because of the large dollar difference in Canadian and US I figured it out that it would cost around $4000.00 and there is no turkey that is worth that money and when I know I could kill one.

Bull Nice mounts and congrats ! I wish I could get all mine done, I have 3 and the last one has been at the Taxidermy for 4 years. Don't take anything to Bowyers Taxidermy , you'll never get it...

Turkey Goddess 03-28-2011 06:01 PM

Awesome bullmoose - Adrian u leave me speechless! LOL

Adrian - when do you start hunting? I want to update it on our team thread...

I've got one grand slam to my credit. It took me 3 years to do it. What I would like to do now is try and do a grand slam in 1 years time, and then go for my royal slam. No interest in shooting an Oscillated.

Beard Buster 03-28-2011 07:44 PM

oscillated would be awesome... just SO expensive

Paint, I understand what you mean about the jungle chicken. I also have no desire to hunt them.

Kim, I started hunting back when I was about 10 with my grandfather , but never hunted turkeys until 1989 ...

OntElk 03-29-2011 09:18 AM

The greatest trophy you have from all those slams is not the mounts but that good ole pickup beside the garage. Ole Red is a turkey hunting legend in it's own right. I miss shaking along in that thing going down to the lease lol.

DTC 03-30-2011 06:41 AM

I completed my slam back in 2008. Would like to go hunt the goulds one day but have no desire to hunt the jungle chicken. My 8 year old so is half way there and we are planning a trip for merriams next month. If that goes well we will head to FL next spring to try and finish him out.

salukipv1 03-30-2011 10:24 AM

I plan to get 5 of the 6, so whichever slam that is? the main 4 in the US first...then work on that 5th.

I only have an eastern, spring rolls around and I find myself planning fall hunts for big game, not going on turkey hunts, I end up just chasing them in my home state.

So who knows if/when. Maybe when I have some extra cash laying around I'll just book a hunt for one of the others.

bornagain64 03-30-2011 12:04 PM

Keep at it swampbuster and you will get it.

Is there such a thing as a public land slam?

That is the one I am working on. That is the hardest of all slams to get.
One of each species on public land.

John

My Slam

Just got my Grand Slam done last week with my final bird an Osceola down in FL (took me three years)....... But to make the rest of the season fun I'm going to try and take a Rio, Eastern and Merriam all this season as well so I can say I did it all one year.

Grand slam in 2005

I shot my Grand Slam in 30 days in 2005. It was the most exciting thing I have accomplished with my bow. I began bow hunting for turkeys in 1999 so I accomplished my Grand Slam six years later. To date, I have taken 94 turkeys with a bow. I spent a lot of windshield time going state to state to get the 94 birds.

Turkman

No I dont...

I probably won't, need to go to Florida sometime, but I have better things to do if I do go there.. Pretty much, as anything else, you can buy your slam... you just have to dump the money in it

True but you can make friends on here and hunt with each other. Thats how I pretty much got it done at a reasonable price.

I am new to this site and noticed this post about Royal Slams. I am currently trying for a single season Royal Slam.

Since drawing a coveted Gould turkey tag in Arizona this past November I have been making plans.

I started in Texas the 19Th of March and bagged a Rio Grande (double). Then I headed for Florida on the 24Th where I hunted Saturday and Sunday for the Osceola around the Green Swamp with no luck. Headed for Georgia Sunday evening for my Eastern with tornado's all around. Got up Monday morning to the sound of thunder and rain hitting the roof, I didn't let that dampen my spirits and bagged the Eastern at about 10:30. Took a day to rest and headed back down to Green Swamp Tuesday night. Talked with three different gobblers at first light they hit the ground and quit talking turkey. I waited them out and one of the three decided he'd come see if he could find those hens talking early that morning he came in gobbling from about two hundred yards (the longest wait of my life) only to run into a load of number sixes. This completed my multiple season Grand Slam.

I start the Merriam's hunt in New Mexico on the 15Th for my single season Grand Slam and then the 22ND in Arizona for the single season Royal Slam

Turkey Goddess 04-03-2011 04:32 PM

Good luck Larswildu!!! Let us know how it goes!!! You should be in the turkey contest!!!

I didn't say it was what you did...
I stated that 90% of the guys that get this, or shoot most trophy animals, etc... usually just have the money to put towards it. I don't see it as a status of hunting expertise as some people do... Just means a person went to other places to shoot a bird utilizing an outfitter, guide, service, etc...

Adrian J Hare 04-04-2011 04:11 AM

I for one take a little affence to the quote as I did not use outfitters at all and took the slam on management areas/ public land or I did pay a guy $50.00 tresspass fee's to hunt a small farm for a rio on the way back from a merriams trip. I guess it was the way you typed it..

I'm just like the next joe and work the same as the small guy,I did my homework and put it together ,, I however would love to win a lottery then look out !

DTC 04-04-2011 06:17 AM

I got my rio and merriams buy swapping on this website. I have became super good friends with both of them since. I did save up the $$$ and pay for my osceola hunt. I figured since I did my others so cheap that I could splurge on the final bird.

swampbuster 04-04-2011 04:44 PM

Congrats Larswildu keep us informed. Good luck!

swampbuster 04-04-2011 04:48 PM

I am a blue collar worker and dont have my pockets laced with hundred dollar bills, and if I did i would still choose not to pay a guide service. Do it on public land or pay a small tresspassing fee.

Nauticstar 04-04-2011 05:52 PM

Did my first Grand slam back in 2007. Did it all in the same season. This is the first season I will be trying since then. Great start as I have taken three eastern's here in Alabama and got my Osceola in the first 15 minutes of my hunt Friday. Great stories and pictures of all the slams. Good luck to everyone.

Here are the pic's of both Rio Grande (a double) the Eastern and the Osceola. All these hunts have been from help with friends in Texas, Georgia and Florida and very little out of pocket expense. The last two Merriam's and Gould I am completely on my own.

gun870guy 04-05-2011 07:27 AM

As previously stated, not everyone pays for it. I know a few guys here that have a slam, couldn't hunt on their own to save their lives, still have trophies all the same.
Huntings a series of personal accomplishments, its not a damn competition and wavin slams and trophies around doesn't mean anything. The guy doin the most waving probably paid someone else to do the footwork on the hunt and they just pulled the trigger.

Turkey Goddess 04-05-2011 05:33 PM

There's nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments :) I think each person finds satisfaction in different things - not so much how many points a bird scores, or what species maybe - but the thrill of working a bird and out-smarting him. Or sometimes the best hunt - is one that results in no turkey being killed, but the thrill of the hunt itself.

Kim :)

Tribute!!! 04-14-2011 03:04 PM

I am planning on getting the Osceola in the next couple years. Took a Rio, Merriams and Eastern last year all in the same week in 3 different states. Nebr, Texas & Iowa!

mookyj 04-15-2011 04:52 AM

I have two slams so far, looking to eventually finish out the royal & word. I have a line on a hunt for the ocellated, but nothing yet for gould's. northern mexico doesn't look all the appealing given what has been going on there. I would not go with out a group for sure. Have to have someone to talk to in the prison's there :)

May look into the draw for Arizona, might be a bit safer

My Gould’s turkey taken this weekend in the Chiricahua's of southern Arizona gives me the multi-season royal slam, one to go for the single season royal slam. Getting drawn for the Gould turkey was the only reason I took on the quest for the royal slam. this bird has an 8" beard

Headed back to New Mexico for the Merriam's after I attend the Royal Wedding to complete my Royal Slam.:)

Little footnote all of my birds have been taken in the good Ole United States of America. Most hunters complete their Royal Slams by taking their Gould's in Mexico.

Grand Slam

I completed my multi-season grand slam last spring...self guided...public land. Pretty cheap "vacations" (gas and licenses) and I got to turkey hunt. My wife is a Rio from completing her grand slam. We plan to go get her a Rio and then work to get the Gould turkey tags to finish off our Royal Slams. I did it for the extra chance to turkey hunt and the adventures along the way. The grand slam was just an extra accomplishment that I'm proud of.

Congrats Larswildu! Nice Job! Were you successful in NM for the merriam?

Iowa Jaybird 06-19-2011 08:08 AM

Personally, in the past, I could care less on slams. Until this year had only hunted Easterns. However, being I've got 2 Osceolas, and the Rio/Merriams are close by, I might start thinking about a slam. However, being I'm on a pretty tight budget, I'm not paying outfitters to get one.
