Creating Turkey Habitat
Hello all,
I'm in Wisconsin, moving to a new house. I was wondering what what I can do to improve the turkey habitat.
There are plenty of natural oaks nearby, and I'm right on a major state forest (23k acres). I have several acres of my own to work with.
What should I be doing?
I know they are out there, I got a lot of gobbles in response to a few owl and crow calls today.
My main concern is lack of anything apart from oak trees.

If you have the space and equipment, you should think about creating an opening or two. Although turkeys prefer large openings of 10 or more acres, they'll use a small 1 or 2 acre opening if that's all they have. They like to be out in the open where they can see a long way and be seen by other turkeys. And if you can, disk it up really good, they love fresh dirt. I'm no wildlife scientist by any means, but I think making some openings should be your next step. Google "creating openings for wildlife" and read more about it, there are plenty of good sites to research. Do you have any water sources nearby?
