Does anyone have a call that is super special to them?

Does anyone have a certain call that they just feel more confident in or have had the best luck with? Mine is a willowridgecalls cherry pot with bronze glass over canarywood with a purpleheart striker. Whats yours?

Arrowmaster 12-24-2010 10:43 AM

Mine is a Slate by Cody. But now there might be a new constant in the running. Its from Fire and Iced calls. It sure sounds sweet and looks nice too. :)

palmtree2 12-24-2010 12:37 PM

Mine is a home made slate call that is deadly on these Osceolas

RPD63 12-25-2010 06:11 AM

I have a slate call that I made a few years ago using some Florida wild cherry. My turkey hunting partner passed away about a year ago and this was a call we often used while hunting together. R.I.P. Tim.

I only carry 3 calls in the woods with me(unlike JW!, he carries several), slate call "Old Yellar", a mouth call and I don't have a clue who it is made by, and my best closer is the first scratch box call I made.

ABSOLUTELY!!! :) Eric (Fire & Iced Calls) made me one - I'm going to try using it this year. Can't wait!!!!

I love the custom made calls. We have a friend who's made us several. Our favorite is slate over glass - zebra wood. This one helped us kill a big TOM (hubby's first turkey) last spring - The call sounds amazing! Cubby's Custom Calls "Talk Sexy"... I'm anxious to put Eric's call into action this spring! There's something about a custom made call that makes it special! Killing a big TOM w/ one.????... PRICELESS!!!!!

Kim :)

I guess for me it would have to be my Cody World Class I bought back in the early 90's...

RockyMtnGobblers 12-27-2010 07:03 AM

Fav. Calls

I never go hunting without my H.S. Strut DD mouth call and their early 90's model glass call, killed all my Merriam's with them, I always bring others too but rarely use them. :barmy:

JoeA 12-27-2010 04:53 PM

I have a real nice glass call (Howard's Custom Calls) that works real nice. I also have a box call I got several years ago (Camp Calls). The maker, David Camp, passed away several years ago. I've struck quite a few birds with it.

PY Antlers 12-31-2010 05:07 AM

The best call I always make sure I have with me is one that Harry Blodgett gave probably 10-12 years ago. It's slate over glass and sounds awesome. If I could only take one call in the woods with me that would be the one hands down.

nysbowhunter 12-31-2010 06:27 AM

A favorite? Hmmm.

I have a few good ones Including A vintage world champion
lynch box that was my gramps (the first turkey noise I ever made was on this when i was 4 years old) but the cheap old push button easy yelper i bought years ago has clucked and purred as many old toms to there doom as the 20 or so others i have all put together. It isnt a flashy custom but I'll take it every time.

turkey guide 12-31-2010 08:51 PM

My lynches world champion box call is my first and last call. I've never used another call since I bought it in 1983. No reason to complain either. I'm gonna buy another just in case something happens to the original, but I will keep using it until it breaks. I did try mouth calls but never could make a sound with one. If I don't have my box call handy though I can call using my mouth, just no call. I don't do any other bird calls but learned to talk turkey in the 80's. I also speak coyote and hoot owl which come in handy for locating turkeys before dawn.

My K&H 013 mouth call and my faithful ole yeller is all I need, But i have several I carry with me.

RPD, have you ever hunted off Countyline Rd. & Bruce B. Downs?

Rebel Hog 01-20-2011 06:55 AM

I have an Old Lynch 102 box, an old Quaker Boy box and an old Knight & Hale box...

Bruinsden 01-20-2011 07:34 AM

I have a Mahogany Scratch Box call that is pretty special. It really makes sweet soft seductive yelps that bring those hung up gobblers in. I only get it out when one is hung up. I mainly use a slate call and a 2.5 reed mouth call.
If I could only carry one call it would be a mouth call.

No Rebel Hog, I never have. I live just down the road from that corner. That was a great looking spot before all the development. Was that your neck of the woods?

PALongspur 01-22-2011 04:27 AM

Mine would be my Cody Spec1 slate, followed by my World Class slate.

I have a Cody World Class that I bought a the Harrisburg show back in Feb 97... I had Bill sign the call a few years ago and he acted sorta surprised to see that call... He told me he doesent make them much any more and that they are special order... He asked me how much I payed for it and I told him 75.00... He laughed and said there 150.00 now... When I bought the call in Feb 93 he was running the calls from his booth with a new striker that he was coming out with... It was made of Body Wood I think... Anyhow I asked him if I could have that striker with the call and he was reluctant to give it to me but he did... I thought that was pretty cool...

Looks like we are neighbors. I am on the north side of county line Rd. in Oak Grove. You must live very close to where Mr. Warfields nursery was. I have lived in the area since 74 but do most of my hunting on public land. When i was a kid, I used to dove hunt where Oak Grove is located. Where do you do most of your hunting?

Man, i hate to pick just one! I would have to say my favorite is my primos power crystal glass call. I like to use them all, but thats always a go to.

springspur 01-31-2011 12:22 PM

fav call

It would have to be a cane creek slate call, followed close by an ashby's gobble box. Killed all my birds with them.

Camp Callers are back in business. The same person (Donnie Gallahar) is back making them again. You can get in touch at deleted by JW - advertising is not allowed here

UncleNorby 02-14-2012 03:39 AM

The first box call I made was from some wood that came from an old table pulled from my Grandfather's barn after he passed away. It was too far gone to restore, so I used the wood to make a different project and also the box call. It sounds great and I have called turkeys with it. So, "No.1" is a special call to me.

Todd1700 02-14-2012 04:54 AM

Mine would be my Woodhaven calls. I have the Cherry Crystal Classic and the Classic slate. Pricey but I have never heard a better sounding slate style call. Many Monroe County AL gobblers have walked into shotgun range because of them.

Uncle Nicky 02-14-2012 07:56 AM

I love my $25 waterproof MAD River Otter Box Call. When all else fails & it's time to get serious, this is the call I use.

Larswildu 02-14-2012 02:26 PM

the only call I use is a box call Made by Albert Paul (Paul's Calls)

Arrowmaster 02-14-2012 07:19 PM

Oh I have a couple calls that are special to me. I'll start with my slate call by Cody. First call my wife bought me and did she get it right. Now I have my Fire and Iced call from my buddy Firelt. What an awesome slate it is. It looks awesome and sounds awesome. Then I have the mouth calls from my buddy Southernstrut56. I wore one of them out last year. The sound was awesome and it called me in a nice tom to kill.

Iowa Jaybird 02-15-2012 12:06 AM

I've called in many with my Dale Rohm box call. It plain talks Turkey.

Bible_Man 02-15-2012 08:23 AM

My favorite is a Rocky Top Game Calls crystal over slate...when paired with their custom striker, the sound is top notch. Next to that are two mouth calls...a Rocky Top ghost cut and a Primos "Will Primos signature" call. I have a bunch of calls that work, and about all calls out there will be effective at one time or another...I have an older friend that still does most of his calling on an aluminum can. But, those I listed at first are my favorites.
