whats everbody throwing at turkeys next spring
hey everybody ive been turkey hunting for a few years here in maine i do alot of scouting prior to the hunt and have got one on opening day every year, this past summer i bought a bow and have been thinking off sticking one this year with that. just wondering what everybody else is useing for broadheads or even what gun, caliber, shot size everbody uses. so far ive shot two with a browning bps 10 guage with remington #4 shot through an extra full tube wow they dont even think about up also shot two with 12 gauge mossberg 835 actually shot them with # 4 steel that i had left over from duck season Hey it worked !!

Stoeger P350 12 gauge, extra full Undertaker choke, Federal Premium 2oz 3" #6
Nothing fancy but it works for me. |
Dont see me ever trying a bow for spring gobbler... Hard enough with a SP turkey gun!!
My gun of choice will prob be my old 870 with a 26" barrel teamed up with a Rem Ventilator choke and Win 3" HV #5's... Good out to 45 yards... |
I'm considering using a single shot H&R Topper 20 gauge. Not sure about loads yet.
|
Ill be caring CHARLES DALY 12ga with winchester 3in #6 turkey loads or my JAGUAR MAGNUM with Beeman tip with SWACKERS.

I assume you mean in addition to several strings of curse words.:) I got a hold of some Rem. Wingmaster HD. I dropped a few long beards with Hevi-shot and can't complain. I can't wait to see how the HD compares.
Just so the message doesn't get lost in the bragging about this shot or that super-duper alloy, lead works great too. I've spent a few $$ on heavier-than-lead shells and specialized chokes made for 'em, I'm bound to try and get my moneys worth from the investment. That said, I dropped my first two birds with Win. Supreme 2.75" #4 shot, 'cause that's all I could find at the store for turkey loads....you could not have made them any deader with any shell. |
SP-10, loaded with Nitro's in 7 shot.
Gman |
as far as a bow goes....they say stick with a turkey head aka like gullitine or other brands like that. or an expandable. you dont want the arrow going threw the bird you want it sticking in the bird as long as possible.........i guna use rage 3 blades this spring on my gobblers

Joe, I also shoot the Rem. Hevi shot, the ones they don't make anymore. I still have a couple boxes of them in 3 1/2" 5 shot. The HD's actually pattern better in my gun than the hevi's, but I'm still going to use the hevi shot while I have them. They have worked great for me throughout the years. I will probably mix the HD's and the Hevi shot. I shoot an 870 12ga. SPS-T thumbhole with a Jellyhead choke. The HD's pattern better than any other load I have tried, including the Hevi 13's, which by the way pattern horrible in my gun, and the Win. Xtended.
I'll be holding up my Benelli Nova 20ga with a .570 Pure Gold and 3 in, #6, 1 1/4 oz Hevi 13 loads with patterns like this at 40 yards why carry a heavy 12 gauge... ![]() |
Adrian, I can't find the 2 oz. anywhere around here to save my life, so I have never tried them. I can't even find them at Bass Pro. I've tried the green shell and the bronze shell, and both patterned horrible for me. I know they will do better in some set-ups, but with mine, they just aren't very good. Sure I could kill a turkey with them, but with the pattern I got, I'm not going to take a risk. I shot them many times, and with three different chokes, and the results were the same. I have heard the 2 oz. is a much better load, so if I ever find some, I may experiment. Like I said though, the Wingmaster HD's pattern the best out of my gun, so I will be using them in the future along with the Rem. hevi shot i have left. Knowing my luck though, as with the hevi shot, Remington will probably stop producing them just as soon as I start using them.

hey guys good info thanks for not making it an argument like some other forums end up..
just wondering what everybodys max range is i know mine even with my bps 10 ga has always been 45 yards no matter what i shoot or what tube i use (yeh ive tried a bunch and it cost me) so that said i can consistantly shoot a 2 inch group at 50 yards with the stick andd string take a gulotine ao similar broadhead and whaack, turkey down. or i miss and throw the bow in the wooods to pick up my shotgun. either way ive missed with the shotgun too.. can they move faster than a deer and get out of the way of the arrow? @ 320 fps a deer cant!!! |
I generally BOW HUNT Spring Gobblers but I do have a speciality shotgun that my kids use mostly.
Bow rig, Mathews DXT Spot-Hogg, Hogg-It QAD Ultra-rest HD Mathews T3 CX Maxima 3D Selects Rage 2 blade Shotgun, T/C Encore Pro Hunter 24" turkey barrel Indian Creek, Black Diamond Strike, custom choke Tru Glo Gobbler Stopper Red Dot 3", 2oz., #5 Hevi Shot |

For my T/C Encore, I've had very impressive, consistent patterns at 50 and 60 yards! However, my goal is to keep 'em less than 40 yards. Last season my Daughter took her 24 lb'er at only 8 YARDS with it... thats how we like 'em!!! :D |
thats what i have seen to most of the birds ive shot have been at less than 20 and the logest was at about 50 after he had been wounded by my buddy, wouldnt normally have taken that shot
|
Everything I got, I am still in search of my first spring gobbler. Remington 1100 baby.
|
For a shotgun I will be using either the Hevi-13 3" 2oz #6's, the Nitro 1-7/8oz #7's, or if they are out in time and pattern well enough the Hevi-13 3" 2oz #7's.
Think I will try to take one or two with the bow this year too. |
I will be using my Benelli M2 with there extra full choke and I will be shooting my 2 3/4" reloads. They are 1 1/2 oz. duplex loads with #4 over #6 shot. They pattern unbelievably well.
|
I may try the H13 #7s, but if not, I'll stick with 2.25 oz 3.5" #6 H13s out of my 835 w/20 inch barrel with either jelly head or pure gold choke.
