RE: Pic of PMC' s fine TOM!!
Thanks for posting the pic for me Paul. Thanks for the kind words fellas, here is the story.
I got this gobbler on 4-29-03, the second day of Ohio' s spring season. I went to a spot that I knew held gobblers, I just didnt know where. I didnt get to scout it before season. It was close to home so I went. I got to the spot at 5:55am. I walked down a logging road about a 100 yards from the truck and let out an owl hoot at 6:05am. GOBBLE---there he was, about 200 yards from the logging road. It had rained the night before and there was a little bit of fog on. I knew I could slip close. The day before I set up on a gobbler and didnt get close enough and a hen took him away.
I got to within 70 yards of the gobbler, by now it was almost 6:25am. He had been gobbling on his own every 30 to 40 seconds, real easy to keep tabs on him. I sat up behind a log that was almost knee high. I got my gun up and pulled out my Cody II. I wasnt going to make a sound till he hit the ground. To my surpise I no more got the call out and I heard him fly down and gobble as soon as he hit the ground. This was at 6:25am. I let out 4 soft yelps, he cut me off on the third one. My heart was about to come out of my chest. I couldnt see him because of some brush and he was coming around it. I waited one minute and yelped 4 times agian. Once again he cut me off on the 2nd or 3rd yelp, this time he was about 30 yards from me. I still couldnt see him. All I could hear was him spitndrum. My gun barrel followed him spitndrumming, my heart pounding. He was going to be coming around the roots of a fallen down tree, he would be 13 to 15 yards from me when he cleared the roots, up close and personal!! He came around the tree in full strut, the sound of his spitndrum was awsome at that close of a distance. He stuck his head up to look for the " hen" . I sent a load of 3.5 Nitro 4X5X7 hevyshot from my 12 guage 870 Super Mag his way. He never moved when he hit the ground. I was surpised I didnt take his head clean off. I was glad I didnt. It was almost 6:30am. From the time he flew off the roost till the Nitro load put him down it was just under 4 min. Quickest hunt I have ever had. Two other gobblers on down the hill tore it up till I got back to the truck some 40 min later. I wish I had had a buddy with me, he might of got one of them.
The stats: 18lbs 9.5" beard 1" black as coal spurs.
