worst season ever for gobblin!
this has been the worst season I can remember as far as turkeys gobblin on our lease. 1st mornin they gobbled good. then it came a cold front and turned cold and windy. from then till about 2 weeks ago, 1 gobble is all I could get, and that was about ever other day. then they finally just quit completely. got to be better next year. I ain' t complanin, I got one with my shotgun, and got a shot at one with my bow, both Big turkeys. still got till sunday to hunt though. I' ve just never seen them not gobble for this long.

|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
About the same here, our season came in April 21 and the 1st week and half was real good , but since last Wednesday they have just about shut-up. It ends Sunday and I' m off the rest of the week, I hope things get better before its over this year.

RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Yes I agree with Maytom!!
Don' t give up!! You know alot of people are experiancing the same thing so don' t feel alone My Friend;) |
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
it has been the worst season I have saw ,in regards to gobbling in the 38 years I have hunted turkys.
I heard only one bird gobble the whole season in my area.he gobbled three times. that was it. a real bad season fo me and most of the guys that I know. ready for next year, maybe they will make up for it then.[:-]:D:D |
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Same thing happend here, the first day was good i heard them gobbeling but all the other days combined i heard mabe 6 gobbles and thats it. Im not complaining though, i got mine the first day! Just couldent make anything happen for my dad
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
I feel spoiled now, the birds have been riping it up for a month, and show no sign of stopping. Maybe it`s those frosty nights and sunny days but the birds here are going strong.
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
ya. they hardly gobbled in iowa this year. there wasnt any turkeys this year too.
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
I forgot to tell ya' ll this. my wife' s first cousin has a lease about a mile down the road from our lease, and he said he' s heard more gobbles than he ever has this year. that' s really strange.
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Wifes cousin must have stole your birds.lol Not much gobbling here in NC either, first week and a half were good, last two weeks nothing season ends Sat.,I got one more tag I need to fill. Hope things pick up in the morning

RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
The same here buddy......first couple of days were awesome.....after that, nothing. I noticed something this morning though. I had a gobbler gobble a couple of times off the roost. I thought I was in busines....then out of nowhere....WHOO WHEW WHEW.... a hen flew down about 20 yards away from me, and no sooner then she hit the ground, she trotted toward where the gobbles had came from. Then just as soon as she got out of site, that was it...no more gobbles. Talk about " HENED UP!!" [:@][:' (]
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Whew!!Sounds tough Terry!!Silent woods makes for frusterating days let alone a season!![:' (]Got to be a reason though, hens, weather, lack of birds, possibly peaked early or still to come! Got to be something!!We had about a 2 week stretch that the birds went from hot to cold, but I do believe it had more to do with weather and huntin pressure than anything because the birds after being yelped and yawked at opening week and battling some cold wet windy nights they seemed to get more active later in the morning on to the evening than they were at sunrise!!

RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Im with you man. I know ive mentioned it in a couple of past posts, but here in NW Florida the birds had the severest case of lockjaw I have seen in 20 years. I know the birds are there, they just arnt talking. Definatly a tough season. [:-]

Rformani, if thats the case(henned up) then the best time to hunt those gobblers is from about 11:00 till 1:00. I' ve killed more turkeys that time of day than any other time. they' ll come to ya, after they have bred those other hens.
Bob, I know it hadn' t been the weather. right after that cold front moved through, we had perfect weather for over 2 weeks. it' s hot and humid now, but you couldn' t have asked for better weather before about last friday. usually they' ll gobble some on the roost even when their henned up, so I don' t think that' s been the problem. we hadn' t got a lot of gobblers on our lease this year, but I know for a fact there' s still one big gobbler (the one I shot at with my bow), and a jake. seen him monday mornin with 5 hens. I kinda think the breedin perriod is all out of wack this year. I figured those hens would be settin by now, but I' ve seen 6 hens fly off or on the roost in the last week and a half. went this mornin, didn' t hear a peep. our season ends Sunday, so I' ll probly go a few more times and call it quits.:( |
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Hang in there Bo! You never know when that big boy is going to land in your lap.
They gobbled really good here, but the hunters were all over this year and after a few days of constant harassment, they shut up for a week and a half. Heard a few get cranked up after that, but every time I got anywhere near one gobbling it was only a matter of time before somebody barged in and ruined it. I refuse to give up though. :D I' m kinda hard headed that way. ;) |
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Washington state had a very cool and wet turkey season. Don' t know if that had any effect, but in this hunter' s eyes it was a lousy season for gobbling activity.
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
They were gobbling very good on the roost and for a little while after fly-down for the first week and a half. It was starting to slow down just before I had to return home from vacation. I had planned to wait a week or two and see if they started back up since the hens would be starting to nest now and they would need to gobble to attract any " leftovers." I' ll call the landowner and see what he' s heard.

RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
I' ve been hearing plenty of gobbling here in central PA. I' ve hunted 4/26, 4/28, 4/29, 5/1 (best day so far), 5/2, 5/3, 5/5, 5/6, 5/7, and today 5/9. I' ve heard and/or worked birds every single day, just haven' t killed one yet.

RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
This is some of the poorest gobbling I' ve seen here in north-central Wisconsin. I really believe that our tom to hen ration is so un-balanced right now that the toms briefly gobble in the roost and then lock up. In my neck of the woods, I would say the gobbler to hen ratio is about 1:15 and in some cases even 1:25. Maybe someone knows for sure, but isn' t the proper ratio about 1:8?
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
L King, I don' t know what the proper ratio is, but in my opinion, all states that are overly populated with hens, should allow hens to be taken durin the fall. Ar allows 1 turkey of either sex, and it' s bow only in my zone. I wish they would allow 2 turkeys in the fall, that way I couldn take a gobbler with my bow, and still take a hen, which would help with the gobbler to hen ratio. I mean, they let us thin out the doe population, which helps with the buck to doe, so why not the hens?
then we' ed have a little less competion durin the spring. I saw a jake the other day with 5 dang hens. so, it' s way out of proportion down here to. |
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
our season here in ms runs from the third week in mar - may1st. the mdwfp sends all who participate in the spring survey, a detailed report by district on gobbling, number of gobbles, number of jakes and hens observed etc.i live in north ms and the gobbling peaks in the third week then begins to decline.obviously, due to 38% of the birds being killed the first weekend and most hunters in the woods the first three weeks, the gobbling declines for very obvious reasons.there are mature birds still around but they are not as vocal and very careful to screen the " real" hens before gobbling.i cranked up mature birds after 12:00 noon in the same place i could not kill them the last week of the season without a gun since my limit was filled april 1st.

RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
Bo,just read an interesting article in this months News from the Roost put out by the NWTF.The article is about late season tactics and Eddie Salter one of H.S' s pro staffers and longtime turkey hunter/caller talks about the overall turkey population has increased so much across the nation that in most areas gobblers tend to have hens throughout the spring season making for some challenging hunting and quieter birds!I do beleive the popularity of the sport has grown so much that the first couple of weeks in most areas especially on public ground many of the active, vocal, birds get harvested as loner talks about in his post! When this happens your left with those birds that survive by being wise to the turkey hunter, that gobble far less, and our in the mode of having the hens come to him instead of him going to the hens! The age old question remains our we shooting the gobble out of the wild turkey??In a sense I beleive we do,because no turkey hunter is after that callshy, henned up gobbler, that gobbles far less than those jakes and 2 year olds that can rattle up any spring morning! We all when we take to the woods are after that bird that responds to our calls and presents us with a real opportunity to work him and without that bird being vocal we' re somewhat left out in the dark especially in new country or ground we have' nt scouted!Bottomline is in most areas and states I hunt vocal birds get harvested quick leaving more and more silent woods as the season progresses:)!!Bob

RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
bogobble we had the same problem right across the river in bradley county. I got to go to three gobbling turkeys all season long. I actually heard more turkeys across moro creek in calhoun county than on our lease. The three leases that border ours had the same kind of luck as we did.
|
RE: worst season ever for gobblin!
that in most areas gobblers tend to have hens throughout the spring season making for some challenging hunting and quieter birds!I bennie, did you get one this year? I got one the first mornin with my gun, and bowhunted the rest of season. missed a big gobbler at 2:00 one evenin at 15 yds. I hit a limb:( |
