RE: Do Jakes Breed?
The reason I asked the question is this. On our property there were three gobblers, now since deceased. However, there are nine jakes.. Since we harvested the mature toms, I wanted a little reassurance that the breeding will get done this year. The birds were 27, 23 and 21 pounds respectively.

Much of the breeding may have already taken place before you harvested the mature toms. If not, I' m sure the jakes or other toms that move into the area looking for receptive hens will take care of the flock. Sounds like you have a healthy population of birds, I wouldn' t be too concerned about it, nature has a way of taking care of things like that. By the way, those were some dandy birds.....27 lbs., WOW! Way to go!

I HEARD OR READ SOMEWHERE THAT ONCE A HEN GETS BRED THE SPERM IS STORED BY THE HEN AND WILL LAY A CLUTCH OF EGGS EVEN THOUGH THE GOBBLER IS HARVESTED.SHE WILL HOWEVER,CONTINUE TO BREED ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT NECESSARY.

Yes. they will breed if there isnt a dominate tom in the area. The jakes are shy birds that get their as#es kicked avery time a boss tom sees them breeding. They will breed if they know for sure there isnt a big tom around.
Hope this helps
