Default RE: Birds right above me on roost.....

thats pretty tough...should either waited to hear them off the roost to move in or located it prior to hunting them or roosted them the night before...i dont know they will move out or not...may have but maybe not...its really hard to say....today i shot my bird and 5 mins later i could hear his friends still gobbling like nothing hapend about 200 yds away....its hard to say being you were that close and they all know what happend....they will be back in time...but i cant say how soon...good luck...i cant believe you got that close to them on the roost without bumping them off..then set up deks and all and they still didnt fly.....thats crazy.....

You did what you had to do in sitting absolutely still for all that time. I bet it was agony!!

I' d say that if it is a regular roost site, they' ll be back to use it again, though not necessarily tomorrow. You' ll have to locator call in the morning and try figure out their flydown landing zone, and set up there, if you find their roost site.

A friend told me of a time in the Black Hills when he and his buddy set up in the early morning darkness on some roosted the night before turkeys, and, as daylight came, learned that he was sitting under the roost tree, because it was raining turkey poop!! They had no luck, either.

I wonder if a stealthy belly crawl away out from under the roost tree and silent relocate on the opposite side of the way you crawl away when out of sight might not work, if you decide to do that at the first realization of where you are. I know the turkeys wouldn' t want to fly down to a predator like a coyote, and I wonder if they wouldn' t remain in the tree if they saw a predator crawling away. I' d think they would fly the opposite way from where they last saw the predator, when they decided to fly down, so if you circled around, maybe you' d be where they flew.

I' ve never done that, and I think I' d probably sit stock still like you did, because I was within 50 yards of an unknown/unseen hen at flydown last Wednesday, and when she clucked, that' s what I did--sat there as perfectly still as I could.

Good luck tomorrow!!

Hey Ridgehunter....don' t feel bad...I did something very similar...on Saturday I went to my other property that I got 2 birds from last year & been the dumba$$ I am, I didn' t have time to scout the property this year & just assumed the birds would be roosting in the same area....BIG MISTAKE #1..[:@]..I walked in to the area and made BIG MISTAKE #2..[:@]..did not use a locater call....I just headed on in to the setup tree I used last year to bag my 2 longbeards & set up my decoys....went to my tree & kicked some leaves aside & all hell broke loose....them goll darn birds had relocated their roost site to the tree I was going to sit under...[]...what a sight to see approximately 15 birds silhouetted in the early morning twilight as the took to wing and left me standing there cursing everything I did that morning!!!! Needless to say the morning was a bust but I did learn 2 valuable lessons.....DO NOT REPEAT BIG MISTAKE #' S 1 & 2!!!!!!!! Oh well, I now know where they are roosting and as it is private property & i' m the only one hunting it, it will be at least a week before i' m back hunting it so hopefully the birds will forget all about that big dumba$$ that woke them up last Saturday morning!!!! Hope you all have a successfull hunt..[:-]..and a shout out to BOSSTOM....hurry back..with me making MISTAKES like that, I may need your expertice to get my birds this year!!!!!!!!! Talk to you all later....time to go to work!!!!!!!!![:@] Bramptopn Mike [8D]
