Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Oklahoma youth turkey success!

I took my brother out on what has become our annual youth season trip this morning. If you remember, I have taken him the last 2 years and he is 2 for 2 on 10"+ toms (including one double bearded bird, 11" and 6"). This year we decided to go to a different property as I got word from some family members that the birds were really sounding off. We got out to the place I wanted to hunt and started hearing them wake up one by one. By LST, there were about 10-15 birds gobbling on the limb at us but once they flew down, they all shut up. After about an hour of light calling ever 15 min or so, we had 2 jakes come in and put on a show for us. They strutted around the decoys for 10 min or so and moved on with some hens. Then, about 8:30, a gobble let out at about 300 yards down the creek. I gave a short call sequence and then shut up. He answered about 50 yards closer so we knew he was at least headed our way. After waiting another 5 min or so, I called a series of 5 yelps then put the calls away. 15 minutes later he came in quietly with a hen and the rest was history. I mis-judged the shot a little and he made the 43 yard shot with Heavy13 #6s (I thought it was about 33 or so yards). Anyway, he was a nice 3 year old tom, 10.25" beard and 1" spurs. Little punk is 3 for 3 now on 10" birds. I really enjoy seeing him shoot these birds more than if I were shooting them myself.
