I think that means any size shot smaller than #4. As the numbers go up the size goes down.2200

I doubt that is reads "under" and I suspect it reads "smaller". Recheck it. I know of no states thatprohibit the use of shotsize smaller than fours.

More than likely it is stating that you cannot use larger shot than #4's. For example #2's would be larger than #4's and therefore would be illegal. So #6's would actually be much smaller than #4's and would therefore be legal.

The guys above have it right, they mean nothing larger than 4..... the same regs apply here in IL. MY favorite load is 3", 2oz, #6, Hevi13

While it will state # 4 short or smaller - #6 is smaller - Or it might state no larger than #4 to which # 6 is still smaller.

The smaller the Number of Shot size the smaller diameter in inches the shot is and the more shot per oune.

Table from Hodgon Basic Reloader Manual 1998.
Shot Size
#4 diameter of 0.13" - number of pleets per ounce 135
#5 diameter 0f 0.12" - number of pellets oer ounce 170
#6 diameter of 0.11" - number of pellets per ounce 220
#7 1/2 diameter of 0.095 - number of pellets per ounce 345.

However because of velocity - I use # 4 -

Hope this helps.

I'm not trying to hi-jack this thread but does anyone know the reasoning behind this regulation?

Not 100% sure, but I'd say safety.

That reg is definitely for safety purposes. A couple of shot sizes can mean the difference between getting peppered or getting buried. Of course, solve the safety issue before it gets started by good hunter education and always identifying your target and beyond. Be safe out there!
