Time of day
What time of day have you had the most success slayin turkeys? Mid morning to noon has produced the most birds for me.I've killed birds off the roost, butabout 70% of my birds havedied around 10:30-11:30 AM. Don't give up on an early morning hang up. Go back to the truck, eat a can of beanie weenie and drink some water, then creep back into that same area and try to get on him again. You'll be surprised at how many birds will gobble even harder around this time, you just gotta hit that gobblin' peakjust right and it's almostthe most fun you can have with your clothes on, haha.

RE: Time of day
after 9.....a few before then but usually it's mid morning...even got a couple after noon....
as long as I am out there, there's a chance :D |
RE: Time of day
Early morning. Mainly before9 a.m.
|
RE: Time of day
9:00to noon for me. However, I've scored enough right away at dawnto not miss the opening act.
|
RE: Time of day
Dawn until about 830 am..
last year me and my brother killed seperate birds on seperate days within 10 minutes of flydown.. |
RE: Time of day
I've killed birds at first light and I've killed birds at 10 am and later. I've never killed a Tom by them coming into my setup that late however. I've just had to spot and stalk to get in position. If it is early in the morning then they have come into my setup.

RE: Time of day
I've killed them all around the clock. The one I shot last year was at 530pm. I called in one for the girlfriend at 615am.... and one for my best friend at 10am.
My most productive time is typically between 9am and noon. But I agree that I wouldn't ever show up late..... because I have killed an awful lot of birds right off the tree. |
RE: Time of day
Dawn is my favorite time but late morning is when I've had my most success.

RE: Time of day
I've harvested birds at all times of the day, but my most productive time has been from 6 to 10 AM. If it's a short walk back to the truck, I may go back and have asandwich, but most of the time, I take everything I need for the day and hunt all day.

RE: Time of day
I've had about the same success anytime in the morning between first light and 11 AM. However, most days I can only get out for two or three hours early in the morning, so that is when I do most of my hunting. On the weekend I am able to stay out later. Nothing beats the break of dawn though, when you can see the turkeys outlined against the horizon, or hear them gobbling on a quiet morning.

RE: Time of day
ive killed em from fly down to about 0930 or so...
i will be honest though, i used to not hunt much past 10...heck, i still dont do it all the time...depends where im hunting...ive noticed around home, my farmland birds arent very active past 9am..they hit the fields and thats that...and yes they stay out there all day... if im in big woods i can hunt clear till noon and enjoy the day and usually strike up a bird... guess i killed 2 right off the roost...1 i got SUPER lucky and slipped practically right under a couple gobblers...the foliage was much thicker than anywhere else i seen that spring and i had no idea they were RIGHT there till i setup and did some tree yelps and a flydown and looked up and there they were...gobbling going nuts...i have NO idea why it worked out...but they both pitched right down to me...no decoy...calling to them and could see them...it should have never worked...but i wont complain! skipped school that day and made it home before mom left for work and before the bus even came :D the other i worked right off the roost...hen brought him in strutting...think it was 645 or so... all depends on the location and the birds...im working on the patience thing and staying out clear till noon(quitting time in PA) just found it to be a waste of time when im home on farmland...actually dislike hunting birds at home for the most part...not into hunting fields...just me... |
RE: Time of day
All of mine have been before 8 am. course i have to be at work by 10 on the days i work. i put all my scouting to work to try and get the bird as quckly as possible. the longer he stays out the more chance he has to build up his hens. and the harder it gets for my land.

RE: Time of day
Here in Minnesota we only get to hunt one 5 day season. So I take a few days off from work and plan on hunting all day. I love hunting early mornings, but most of my birds have beentaken between 9:00 and 10:00.
|
RE: Time of day
I've had most success around 12:30 - 2:00, but thats killin turkeys... most gobblin i hear is in the morning time.
|
RE: Time of day
The majority of mine have been with in 2 hours after fly down. I dont hunt very much mid morning if i do i am trying to put the stalk on a bird. I do like a good afternoon-evening hunt as they make there way to the roost. it may mess the area up but it is very successful.

RE: Time of day
I've killed most of my birds in the first two hours of daylight. Another good time period for me has been late afternoon.I have killed several between 4:00 and 5:30.
|
RE: Time of day
Love the mornings for all the gobbling but mid morning is the time to kill
|
RE: Time of day
Most birds I have killed or worked with dif outcome have been early. But the birds that have
been the easiest to call in are ones i've located after 10:30. Here in MO daily season ends at 1:00 pm, so i've had to leave some gobblin - hard thing to do. |
RE: Time of day
I have my best luck at mid morning and later in the evening. For some reason I do not have a lot of luck early morning. The best turkey I took was around 7:30pm. You just never know!
|
RE: Time of day
For me it's been from day break till noon... I cant hunt past noon;)
|
RE: Time of day
I've killed them w/in minutes of legal shooting time right away in the morning but it seems around my area here in PA myself and many other hunters I know have been having much betterluck after 10. I wish I woulda never killed a bird at first light then maybe I'd be smart enough to sleep in but I still can resist being there at firstlight.

RE: Time of day
For me, calling at fly-down is fairly low success rate, but lots of gobbling. Some times I relocate, some times I sit tight, then call now and then. Many times I have them come in silent a couple hours after flydown.
I'd have to say 10-noon is when I've had my best success. I've also camped out in the afternoon near a roost until fly-up, and I've shot a couple then too. |
RE: Time of day
usually the first houranda half of light, then right around 9.
