winter turkey
on my way out to my stand today deer hunting, i jumped probably 12 turkeys from their roost 30 yards from my stand. i have never seen turkeys by my stand before. will the turkeys still be roosting in this area come spring time?

RE: winter turkey
Possibly, but no guarantee. Around here turkeys for miles around will flock up in the winter in a protected spot, then scatter out, back to their home range in the spring. You may get some staying around if the habitat is good.

RE: winter turkey
I agree with Wingbone...Winter roost areas are determined by food availability and roosting cover, such as large dense evergreens...
Spring roost areas will be relative to nesting areas...There still MAY be birds roosting close to your stand in spring if there is prime nesting habitat nearby, but there's no guarantee.. |
RE: winter turkey
well i have out a 50 lb bag of corn so that might be why the turkeys were roosted in those trees

RE: winter turkey
they will kill your corn in 2 days max. we have a load of them in the winter and then in the spring not so much. you have to work for them but that is why they call it hunting not killing.

RE: winter turkey
All the turkeys on our farm usually are spotted almost every day of the year. The flocks range from 20-35, they generally get spotted in the same place all the time. The largest flock we counted was 75 turkeys!

RE: winter turkey
Good turkey bait: clean out the horse stalls and spread out on pasture. The turkeys will come in and pick for hay and grain, and eat anything, this will keep them occupied and you can get within 20 feet.
