I' ve started making some this year and I usually use corncobs or some sort of wood dowel, Most of the bells on mine have been made out of light woods such as poplar or birch but I found that if you mix these with an Oak tip they sound pretty good. The next one I make is going to have an oak bell. Give all kinds of woods a try, they all sound different.

In NY there are a few guys now selling homemade strikers made with a wingbone. It uses a piece of the largest section of the wingbone. The bone is then glued into the center of a walnut handle that has been carved and stained...
