Default HS Strut mouth calls (Help!)

Hey there.....

I just bought a new HS Strut Single D mouth call today, when I was out running around up at Green Top Sporting Goods (here in Richmond, VA).

I have never ever used a mouth call before and am totally clueless. I read the instructions and placed the call correctly up in the roof of mouth like the instructions say. I try to exhale and get no sound whatsoever. I play around with my tongue on the call and can sort of get a high pitch " EEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeee" sound, but hey, That don' t sound like a turkey! [:' (]

HELP!!! How do you use these d#mn things?!?!? This is just a simple, single reed, HS Strut call (only cost me $3.99), so if it don' t work right, or I just can' t get it right, it won' t kill me.

Thanks!

i have the same problem, but i have gotten some sounds out of it by using my toungue to put it in differnt positions and stuff. just keep trying and u will get the hang of it, i hate to see some friends of mind go out and muy a mouth call and can get it without any trouble and the only reason that they use them is to piss the teacher off, they dont even hunt. im mad but with enough practice i will be able to do u same as they do to piss the teacher off. who_else

AH-HA!!!!!!!! I think I' m on to something here!!!

After p#ssing off my wife and getting threatened, for annoying her with the HS Strut mouth call, I went into the bedroom, read through the instructions again, doodled with the call in my mouth, and discovered this:

Hold it up in the roof of my mouth (not right up front, but near the eye teeth) and press gently with my tongue.
Touch the back of my front teeth with the tip of my tongue.
Using air from down in the gut, exhale and mouth the word " TALK" .

....it will make a loud Yelp of a hen!! [8D]

When you first start trying to use a mouth call all it takes is practice, practice, and more practice. The main thing is don' t give up, after you get past the " tickleing stage" and able to keep it in your mouth for awhile just try some different things to learn to make different sounds, it will eventually come to where you will be sounding like a pro. Just keep-on keeping-on and don' t let them beat ya.

Thanks Strut....

Yeah, I' ve been practicing with it. I was doing a loud CLUCK on my L' il Deuce slate call, then trying to imitate the tone with the mouth call. It is really weird to get used to. The harder you exhale, the louder the tone. I just need to work on succession of tones. I can make a nice single yelp, but can' t do it 2, 3 or 4 times in a row.

Like you said, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.....

My favorite and most accurate call is my HS Strut Champion box call. It does beautiful yelps just like a hen-in-waiting!

My L' il Deuce slate call also does great yelps, but it can do better clucks and soft purrs more than anything.

Do you guys notice that a certain call is geared more towards a better type of sound than another call?

If you are just learning you really should get a single reed call and put the triple away until you get the hang of it. The more reeds, the harder the call to blow. Each reed has a pitch of its own and with a triple reed call you need to get each reed to break at a different point to make the right sound. With a single reed call only one reed to get to break, only one pitch. The multiple reed calls sound much better but are much harder to blow. Like the rest of the folks said, practice, practice, practice, don' t get discouraged. It takes a long time to get good with a mouth call. I practiced for at least six months until I had enough guts to actually blow one of these things at a turkey. Get a instructional cassette, put it in your car and practice there, won' t bother anyone and the looks you get if the windows are down make it all worth while. Don' t give up, once you figure it out it just gives you another weapon in your arsenal.

Hey butchA it takes awhile for some I' ve been tryinfor about 3 yrs. Just now able to get a young hen or a jake key keying, if you keep struggling H.S. also makes one they call the true trough. It has a hard plastic dome on it that helps set it in your mouth. I found that really helped me start sounding more like turkey than a cow Elk.

Had another thought, I also tend to use a friction for maost all my calls and then stick in the mouth to get purrs. I think they work real good for that and keeps hands free when u need it. Also take the call out in the woods to practice if you can w/oscaring birds. I did that this weekend and out in the woods it sounded alot better than in my car. That' s where it really counts.
