Do turkeys recognize one anothers voice?Obviously chicks imprint on ole mother hen and her voice, but how about ole boss gobbler?I definatley think ole gobbler knows his hens not only by sight but also by voice.Ever been in a situation where you were making some of the sweetest music to a lovesick tom and all the sudden ole raspy hen starts up and your gobbler acts like he never even new you were there in going right to her.Dont be fooled he didnt stand you up because you sounded bad or that she sounded better I believe it was because ole gobbler new who she was!Whats your thoughts on this? <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hmm. Never thought about it tht way but I guess it makes sense. If the gobbler's around hens all the time he SHOULD know what they sound like. Like when our friends call us on the phone, we know who they are (even without caller ID.)

Now I'll probably have someone who's a lot smarter than me call me ignorant, but ... I've been called a lot worse. Duhr!

I think they do. I remember one day in particular when I had turkeys gobbling all around me. I must have had 8 or nine within easy distance to hunt. I was licking my chops and mapping them out in my mind, trying to figure out which ones I could approach, when &quot; The BOSS&quot; sang out ONCE and the woods went silent! If they know the toms that well, why not the hens?

I've had my share of toms hit the ground hearing a boss hen and me and never give me another thought. One I saw in WI was heartbreaking because I had roosted him the night before and also got within 100 yards of him that morning. He walked right by me at 75 yards straight for that boss hen. None of my calls were effective.

However other times I have competed calling with a boss hen and had a tom come to me instead but I would say I've lost more than I've won against a boss hen. What I have gained is the ability to call more like a boss hen.

There are some white hens where I hunt. I've seen them act like they were mad at the gobbler after it answered me. I've seen the tom turn toward me and my hunting partner as we called, then the ole hen trotted to a small hill and made some kind of noise ( we could not hear her but we saw her beek move) and that sob turned and ran to her side. i guess it's that way with us all HUH !!!!
