Most people use a smaller shot size justbecause there are less pellets in a standard 20ga turkey shell vs.a standard 12ga turkey shell.
Personally I use Hevi-13 #6, or Nitro's #7's, but you will have to see what patterns well for you.

Adrian Hare has a video showing how to pattern and he uses a 20 gauge. He found by trying several different brands from Winchester, Remignton and Federal that one of them just shot better - gave a better pattern than the others. He was suing both 4 and 5 shot.
I suggest you do the same. Pattern each at 30 yards and then count the pellet holes in this target.

That is correct johnny - head shots is the only thing while using a shotgun that will cleanly kill any turkey. Take a body shot with a shotgun and the bird is gone.
Now one correction a body shot taken at 10 yards more than likely will make it possible for you to get to the bird but you waste so much of the eating quality of the bird. But then again you have a real good chance the bird will either fly or run away.
And that my friend is how we learn by all of us here sharing. There is no such thing as a dumb question in my books.

After all the testing I have done it seems Hevi shot in a 20 gauge can not be beat. I also found that Hevi shot in #6 has more then enough wamp to knock birds to the ground at 40 yards.
