Treeclimber, Maybe its more accurate to say it is " more common in nature for a
hen to go to a gobbler." After all, isnt that why a gobbler gobbles, struts back and forth and walks in circles? Bucks dont show off this way and neither do male dogs so comparing a bucks actions in nature to a gobblers is not very accurate. There are alot of male animals in nature that stand their ground and try to draw the females to them by putting on some sort of display. Sure gobblers will come to you when you imitate a hen. But you are also imitating a hen that refuses to go to him. Every year ( after i get my season limit) for the past 20 years I have video taped turkeys in the wild. I have watched how they react with hunters in the area, and i have watched them with no hunter interference. I have never seen a situation where a real hen called to a gobbler and he went to her. The exception to this is when the hens leave the roost before a gobbler, the gobbler will fly down to them. I have seen gobblers on the move searching for hens but once they locate them they gobble or strut to try and draw the hens to them. Once the hens go to the gobblers they usually lead the gobbler wherever they want.
I am in the process of converting my videos over to DVD and creating a sort of
documentary on the life and habits of the wild turkey. As soon as it is completed I
would be glad to send you a copy if you are interested.
