I got my first ever turkey today..

The picture and story is on the religious site where I visit the most...I got an 18 pounder today..:)
I 've got a questin for ya
When would you go back to a spot where you just shot one?

Is that the only bird you have scouted? If not move in on another one which you believe may not have been pressured.

If there are hesn were you shot the first bird where will be gobblers there shorty to fill in for his abstance.

If you don't have a clue where there is another huntable gobbler....go to high points at sunrise and sunset and listen..they will tell you where they are at.

Yes sir..I'm a teacher and have the entire week off..I did no scouting the spot is a 60 mile drive round trip..I just thought there would be turkeys there..and there was..

yes sir..I heard 3 different gobblers.
Here he is
18 pounds,
9 inch beard
1 inch spurs.
870 with Remington Nitro .4 shot..
It's an Osceola..;)

Chuck, if I heard other gobblers, I would go right back without hesitation. Is that your first ever, or are you talking about this year? Either way, nice bird and congrats. Now go back and get another.

1st ever ..It's my 2nd year hunting them...I called on ein last year but I wasn't ready..this year my gun was up and i was well hidden.I heard 2 more different gobblers.It's public property..so you have to stop hunting at 1:00 PM..

I'll be back tomorrow morning ;)thanks for the advice.

Congrats Chuck! My 11 yr old scored his 1st bird this morning also. Will post story and pic tommorrow! I noticed you didn't mention which WMA! SMART MAN, lets keep it to ourselves, 60 miles, isn't Green Swamp, but I have a pretty good idea! LOL Beats pay $1000-$2500 like some yankees we know!no offense to our northern friends! I brought a buddy I met on here from NC that had been paying that kind of money and he scored on a WMA. Said he saw and heard more birds than with the guided hunts...... Great 1st bird man, go right back to the same spot, cuz chances are they will be thru there again tommorrow!

.Congrats to your son..Turkey hunting is very exciting to say the least.I'm going back tomorrow..I'm hooked..I love the shells I use too..I tried the Winchesters last year but wasn;'t happy with the pattern so I bought the Remington Nitros..They are awesome.I was wondering why there wasn;t any kick..They were only 3 inch instead of 3 1/2 .
Usualy when the bird drops there isn;t any kick anyway..;)

Congrats, thats a very nice bird. Dont be worried about going back to the same spot. I've done it plenty of times and have had no trouble. Again, nice job on the bird. Aint that the best feeling ever?

Not at all, it's a great feelingto be able to accomplish something new.. I know when my son shot his first deer this fall I do not know who was happier about it him or me..:)When he did that I told him he is now an offical deer hunter.. Congrats again Chuck!!!

I can't waittill my son gets one too Phil..It's very rewarding to see kids doing good things with their time..The outdoors is time worth spent..and scoring a deer is icing n the cake..

I shot it at a public WMA 30 miles away..The Green Swamp.

After a 1 1/2 mile hike into the swamp..I hear for the first time EVER ..the gobbling of a male turkey..I built a quick camo blind..and got out my Primos Freak..I returned the gobble with some yelping..After about 25 times of going back and forth..mixing mine with some cutting..it seemed his gobbles cam e from 100 yds to now within 50 yds..My gun is now up..It's been along 45 minutes of calling..then I spotted a dark shadow and then it disappeared..My shotgun is now on my cheek..and my eyes are clued..I see the turkey ducking and weaving through cypress trees..I've never shot the shells which I have in my gun.They are #4 Remington Nitros..About 25 yds out he steps into a 3 foot wide opening.I squeeze the trigger..he falls down dead.I had about 10 pellets in the neck aea..and only one in the breast..

I can't beleive it..:DI hike back and the man at the gate does the measuring..my wife and I just got done cleaning it..5 packages of breast meat and legs and carcass for the soup pot.
God is wonderful andI thank Him for setting me up .I wasn't even goingto go..but I kept feeling the inward urge to go..and I'm glad I did,;)

Turkey hunting in the spring is a real rush. Calling in and out foxing an old long beard is quite an accomplishment. Perfect time to be in the woods and watching nature awake from the long winter. Seeing the gray light showing silhouettes of the trees and hearing that first tree yelp followed by a thunderous gobble always does it for me. Tough hunting due to the early hours but every bit as much excitement as deer hunting IMO.

Turkey Fife..yes sir..once I was surrounded by 3 huge bull gators bellowing.that was freaky..I couldn't wait till daylight..I said some prayers..that was last year.

To the Newbee...I called one in last year just fooling around .I yelped once or twice and here came a jake out of no where running straight toward me..he saw me and vanished.I'm not as smart as these guys but here are some reminders..You must be well camoflaughed..the gun already pointing in the right direction..These birds have supersonic vision..and ears.

Mr.King, my wife is a 5 star cook.Her hobby is cooking.She made 3 gallons of the that soup last night..It's very good.

congrats on the bird - I used to hunt your general area before moving to NC - one thing I miss is turkey season
