RE: Spit and drum
It is one of the coolest sounds in the woods, and it means they are really close. Although it seems like everytime I hear it, it is coming from the direction I wasn't expecting so i guess it is kind of a bitter sweet...

RE: Spit and drum
Years ago, I took my heaviest bird here in NY. That very gobbler come waltzing in from behind me, andstrutted byon myleft side at a distance of 5 feet!! Spitting and drumming all the way in to my decoy set-up approx 20 yards in front of me. Now you have to hear those sounds being made at that close of a distance and trying to keep from moving and your composure at the same time!!![:-]

RE: Spit and drum
Best sound in the woods, will get my addrenaline going every time. Had a guy one time spaz out after hearing a tukey spit and drum behind us at about 7 yards. He turned around saw the turkey and said in a very loud panicked voice "turkey, big turkey, ... right behind us. Of course the bird jetted. When I asked him why he had talked with a turkey right there he said the sound had scared him. The best was this guy had been braggin how he was some kind of super hunter.

RE: Spit and drum
Last season I was bow hunting fairly close to a paved road, and the birds I had talking since sun up hadn't made a sound for an hour or so. I was just about to pack up when I thought I heard someone driving on the paved road playing music with a lot of bass. I heard it about three or four times before I saw a blue head floating through the grass strait for my decoys. I felt like such an idiot, because it had been so long since I heard one drum that I forgot what it was. Here is a pic of the end result.

RE: Spit and drum
First time I heard it I thought it was someone trying over and over to start a car because I was young and I couldnt see them so I didnt put 2 and 2 together for the longest time. Next time I heard it was when I was hunting by myself and was about to take a nap, whenone gobbled about 200 yards away, so I decided to stay awake for a bit. I was sitting in a cutout in a huge brush pile (best blind ever:D), when I see a hen out of the corner of my eye. Then Pffft Vooooooom. Holy.... Got the gun up got him in the sights and BOOM it was all over.
